Laura Moriarty and Alex Skinner don't like to boast, but they'd be within their rights to.

Down to earth, intelligent and talented, these two local athletes are deserving recipients of this year's Moynihan Lumber Merrimack Valley Student-Athlete of the Year Awards.

Hart making transition

It hasn't been an entirely smooth adjustment, but Britt Hart has made the transition back to Brooks after spending last year at North Andover High, where she was the Eagle-Tribune Player of the Year for the Division 2 state finalists.

Hart, Brooks rally past Phillips

What was supposed to be a classic pitching duel never took place, but both teams had reason to be somewhat satisfied after Brooks' dramatic 7-5 victory over Phillips Academy in Andover yesterday afternoon.

Brooks gets winning run in 7th

Brooks Baseball and the Knights from BBN hooked up in what was a top notch high school baseball game. The two teams battled all afternoon as the pitching set the pace for what was a quick and clean baseball game. Michael Johnson was the stand out of the day as the junior left hander pitched a complete game to carry Brooks to victory.

Brooks opens with win over Pingree

The Brooks Baseball Team opened the 2008 spring season with a solid 10-8 victory over a tough Pingree squad. Brooks was lead by junior hurler Michael Johnson who mixed a sharp breaking ball with his over powering fastball to strike out 10 and only allow 2 earned runs over 5 strong innings. Sophomore Jason Buco finished the job by striking out 5 over the last two frames. In the batters box the Brooks offense came out swinging to score 4 times in their first inning of the season.

Brooks boys basketball coach John McVeigh is one of the region's biggest hoops junkies.

While studying for his master's degree in environmental chemistry at Duke University, he attended games and volunteered at practices.

Buco, rugged Reggies remain perfect

The sun continued to shine on the Greater Lawrence wrestling team yesterday.

As the Reggies romped to their 20th straight win of the season and 45th straight over two years, 59-15 over Brooks, they even won the lone close match of the afternoon.

Brooks' Skinner finds stardom on hard courts, hardwood

For the record, the bribe was made but never paid. Brooks School senior Jordan Mickens was that desperate to talk Bradford's Alex Skinner into playing basketball this winter.

"I offered him $10,000, I would have done anything," joked Mickens, the New Jersey native and only returning starter from last year's team. "He's such a good shooter. I knew we needed him."

Brooks falls to BB&N

Brooks couldn't hold onto a seven-point halftime lead, falling to BB&N 54-47. Brooks' Alex Skinner led all scorers with 20 points while grabbing 15 rebounds.

Andover bests Concord-Carlisle

Sarah Oteri scored two goals and chipped in with three assists to give Andover a 5-3 win over Concord-Carlisle. Danielle Paonessa added two goals and Laura Drew had one to round out the Warriors' scoring.

Brooks downs Groton

Brooks rolled past Groton 60-42. Haverhill's Alex Skinner scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Skinner comes up big

Brooks fell into an early hole but managed to erase a 14-point first half deficit and post a 60-50 win over Pingree. Sophomore guard Jordan Johnson (16 points), Haverhill's Alex Skinner (20 points) and senior guard Jordan Mickens (16 points) each recorded career highs.

Crowley paces Brooks

Peter Crowley made 17 saves to lead Brooks to a 2-1 win over Kingswood-Oxford in the Prep Class A quarterfinals.

The Green and White took the lead when Ayo Iwuagwu banged in a rebound off a shot from North Andover's Chris Gilbert. Andover's Jimmy Campbell added the first Brooks goal on a rocketed 26-yarder early in the half. Brooks will face Roxbury Latin on Saturday.

Westminster shocks No. 1 Brooks

If defense is indeed the key to winning championships, then upstart Westminster School may be tough to beat in the semifinals and finals of the New England Class A prep school girls soccer tournament this weekend.

Brooks ends season winless

NORTH ANDOVER | The Brooks offense was in high gear in the first half yesterday afternoon but, unfortunately, the defense was not.

As a result, Brooks ended a frustrating winless (0-8) season with a 40-22 loss to Rivers.

Hammerl, Marshall lead Brooks past Nobles

Amelia Hammerl and Eliza Marshall each netted a goal in the final seven minutes to power Brooks past Nobles, 2-0. Marshall picked up the assist on Hammerl's goal, and Hammerl picked up the assist on Marshall's goal as each player finished with two points. Goalkeeper Britt Hart stopped six shots to earn the shutout for Brooks, who improved to 11-2-1.

Brooks downs Middlesex

Amelia Hammerl scored twice to lead Brooks to a 3-1 victory over Middlesex. Marina Moschitto played well in the midfield and added a third goal. Liz Bruno stood out on defense for the Green and White.

Pelham rolls past Newport

Brooks gave up two touchdowns in the first quarter and never recovered, losing to Thayer Academy 34-14. "We did some good things, but they were just a better team," said Brooks coach John Quirk.

Among the highlights for Brooks were two long TD passes from Jason Buco, of 75 and 69 yards, and 102 yards rushing from Robert Perryman. Senior Jason Adames of Lawrence scored his first career TD on the 75-yard Buco pass and also had an interception.

Brooks bests Holderness

Eliza Marshall recorded a hat trick to lead Brooks to a 6-2 victory over Holderness. Amelia Hammerl, Nikki Kisner and Hannah Kolodner each added a goal. Hammerl also had two assists.

Brooks run over by Lawrence Academy

Brooks finally found a rhythm on offense. Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, Lawrence Academy was operating on a higher level and ran away for a 48-26 win.

Spartan running back Chris Lane ran past Brooks for 287 yards and six touchdowns as Lawrence Academy accumulated 425 rushing yards as a team. Lane touched the ball on 34 of Lawrence's 52 running plays.

Brooks falls to Governor's Academy

NORTH ANDOVER | Brooks tied the game early in the second quarter, but could do little from there and fell to the Governor's Academy 42-12.

Jordan Johnson led the Green and White with 65 yards rushing on eight carries and a 6-yard touchdown while Robert Perryman rushed 13 times for 62 yards and a 9-yard score.

Brooks downs Worcester Academy

Brooks downed previously-undefeated Worcester Academy, 4-0. Taking a one-goal lead into the half, Brooks poured it on in the second half. Amelia Hammerl, Marina Moschitto, Alice Grant and Eliza Marshall scored for Brooks.

Brooks falls short in upset bid

Brooks had an opportunity for a major upset victory, but a goal in the 87th minute turned the tide and kept Roxbury Latin unbeaten, 2-1. Goalie Peter Crowley was immense, turning aside a penalty kick as part of his 13 saves. North Andover's Chris Gilbert (assist) and freshman Andreas Burbank-Crump shined for Brooks.

Perryman shines for Brooks in loss

NEWPORT, R.I. | A big night from Danville, N.H.'s Robert Perryman couldn't save Brooks.

He rushed for a career-high 202 yards on 31 carries but the Green and White fell to unbeaten St. George's 15-12.

Brooks falls to Belmont Hill

NORTH ANDOVER | Brooks stayed close with powerful Belmont Hill, until the game's final two minutes.

The Green and White fell 20-8 to Belmont Hill in a game that was not decided until Belmont Hill punched in a touchdown with 2:24 to play.

Brooks ties Phillips Academy

Brooks and Phillips Academy battled to a 1-1 draw. Brooks (3-0-1) got a goal from Katie Herter off an assist from Kaleigh Fitzpatrick. Brooks center back Paige Murray (Andover) was another standout. Kelly Walsh scored the lone Big Blue (1-0-1) strike while goalie Shannon McSweeney was a force with 15 stops.

Brooks blanks Phillips Academy

Amelia Hammerl scored a pair of goals as Brooks topped Phillips Academy, 2-0. Brooks goalie Britt Hart made two saves thanks to solid performances from defenders Kristen Sullivan, Liz Bruno, Jess Waters and Monica Berube. Big Blue (3-2) goalie Alex Farrell had four saves.

Brooks scored twice in the second half to preserve a 3-1 win over Groton. Monica Berube, Amelia Hammerl, and Marina Moschitto all scored for Brooks.

Chris Gilbert scored a header off a free kick as Brooks tied Groton, 1-1. Andreas Burbank assisted on the Brooks strike (0-3-1) while goalkeeper Peter Crowley made one save.

BB&N's McCaffrey gives Brooks fits

CAMBRIDGE | Brooks will be having nightmares about BB&N's Jimmy McCaffrey for weeks.

The sophomore sensation, son of Holy Cross basketball Hall of Famer Jim McCaffrey, scored on two punt returns | a 65-yarder and a 52-yarder | in a 35-6 season-opening win over the Green and White. McCaffrey, a 5-11, 171-pound transfer from Winchester High, also scored on a 35-yard pass from quarterback Michael DiChiara. He now has five TDs in two games.
