Merrimack goalie cited

 

Following his first career start in which he earned a shutout and added an assist, sophomore Merrimack College goaltender Sam Marotta was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week.

Marotta made 25 saves in a 5-0 win over Connecticut Saturday. He notched his first collegiate assist after stopping a short-handed breakaway which resulted in a goal by Jeff Velleca.

Thompson nominated

Senior forward Paul Thompson of Derry and junior defenseman Blake Kessel of the eighth-ranked University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team were named semifinalists for the 59th annual Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England. A two-time Hockey East Player of the Month (November and January) and three-time Hockey East Player of the Week, Thompson ranks second in the nation in goals (24), goals per game (.87) and points per game (1.57). In addition, Thompson leads the nation in power play goals with 11.
