At least the Phillips Academy senior will have memories of his glory days, those classic times at Andover, where he once was allowed the opportunity to take part in such a noble profession as sports writing.

Kreider making smooth transition at Phillips Andover

One of his friends has mischievously programmed Chris Kreider's cell phone to play the syrupy 1960s pop ballad "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies whenever it rings.

"I don't know how to fix it, either," laughed the 16-year-old Boxford native. "It's a little embarrassing." He shouldn't be worried. The moves Kreider makes on the ice at Phillips Andover Academy are beautifully sweet.

Twomey's move pays off in landing scholarship to Richmond

He's a center back, a position that doesn't earn much press in soccer. You're not exactly the center of attention.

"You're like a general, shouting out instructions on who should be marking different players," said John Twomey, who plays that very position.

It's Miller time for Knights

With senior standouts Kyle Dolan and Andrew Bogosian immediately preceding him in the lineup, North Andover heavyweight Mike Miller hasn't gotten much notice this season.

But yesterday, in the Knights' 37-22 victory over Phillips Academy, Miller was the hero as veteran head coach Dave Castricone picked up his 599th career win.

Wrestling defines unique Cintron

It's not difficult to see why Phillips Academy head coach Rich Gorham calls Hector Cintron a Lawrence success story. A senior 171-pounder who has been at the same weight class all four years, he sported a 24-6 record as a sophomore and was an impressive 30-8 last year, finishing third at the New England prep meet and winning three matches at the Prep Nationals. He is 12-1 for the Big Blue thus far this year.

Phillips downs Thayer

Phillips Academy bested Thayer Academy 55-52. Megan Robertson had a double-double, scoring 12 points and adding 15 rebounds. Kourtney Diperno led the Big Blue with 18 points.

Russell battles through multiple heart surgeries

Andover's Brian Russell knows better than most the twists and turns life can take.

The Phillips Academy junior looked the picture of health on Dec. 8, 2007 when he erupted for a career-high 21 points for the Big Blue against Kimball Union.

Phillips falls hard in finale

A successful season for Phillips Academy came to a crashing end after a 41-7 loss to Trinity-Pawling in the New England Class A Prep Super Bowl. It was the third straight title game loss for the Big Blue.

Andover's Weiner sends Phillips to semifinals

Andover's Lindsey Weiner took a pass from Britney Van Valkenburg and fired past the goalie six minutes into the game to give Phillips a 1-0 victory over Deerfield in the Prep Class A quarterfinals.

Shannon McSweeney made eight saves for the Big Blue, who host five-time defending champion Hotchkiss in the semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m.

Castellot, Phillips advance

Jenna Castellot fired home the game-winning penalty kick as Phillips Academy downed Kent 3-2 in the Prep Class A quarterfinals.

Down 1-0 at the half, the Big Blue's Emily Little chipped in two goals after the break to send the game into PKs. Defensively, Phillips was led by Catherine Coppinger and Courtney MacDonald. Phillips will play Saturday in the Class A semifinals against the Westminster School.

Phillips aims to stop Trinity-Pawling's brilliant running back

Some of the Phillips Academy seniors are tired of finishing the season with a loss, so they're approaching Saturday's NEPSAC football title game with Trinity-Pawling with more intensity.

Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Williston-Northampton.

Big Blue defeats Exeter

EXETER | Chad Hollis took the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to put Phillips Andover on its way to a 24-14 victory over Phillips Exeter in the 127th meeting of the two schools yesterday.

"Basically, its a dream come true," said Hollis. "I saw the holes, and there was great blocking. I wanted to set the tone for the game."

Farris again hot, leads Phillips to win

ANDOVER | And the beat goes on for Derry's Bryan Farris, Haverhill's Thane Sanford and Andover's Corbin Tognoni.

Farris was 11-of-15 throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns to lead Phillips Academy to a 21-7 victory over Worcester Academy yesterday in a game that was postponed a day due to rain.

Phillips suffers first loss

DEERFIELD, Mass. | The normally high-powered Phillips Academy offense was grounded to just one late touchdown in a 20-9 loss to Deerfield Academy. The setback was the first for the Big Blue (5-1).

Bryan Farris connected on a 47-yard field goal in the first quarter but Phillips had to wait until the final quarter to score again.

ASHBURNHAM | Phillips Academy scored 21 points in the second quarter on its way to an easy 34-6 victory over Cushing Academy, keeping the Big Blue undefeated (4-0).

Former Pinkerton Academy standout Bryan Farris completed 13 of 24 passes for two touchdowns and 286 yards, with Mike Ciummei catching seven balls for 149 yards and a TD. Dan Evans and Whittier Tech grad Thane Sanford (8 carries, 71 yards) chipped in with rushing touchdowns.

Phillips slips by Choate

ANDOVER | Bryan Farris' 44-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as Phillips Academy edged Choate, 11-8, in a battle of two undefeated teams.

After a scoreless first half and a Choate safety to open the second half, Farris got the Big Blue on the scoreboard when he found Mike Ciummei in the end zone on a 12-yard pass. Farris completed 20 of 40 for 254 yards and senior Ryan McCarthy was his favorite target on the day. The duo connected on seven passes for 107 yards. Ciummei caught six passes for 76 yards.

Haverhill's Sanford clinches victory for Phillips

MEDFORD | Haverhill's Thane Sanford broke for his outside linebacker position to knocked down a pass on a two-point conversion attempt with under three minutes remaining to secure Phillips Academy's 21-20 victory over the Tufts JV team yesterday.

Brooks ties Phillips Academy

Brooks and Phillips Academy battled to a 1-1 draw. Brooks (3-0-1) got a goal from Katie Herter off an assist from Kaleigh Fitzpatrick. Brooks center back Paige Murray (Andover) was another standout. Kelly Walsh scored the lone Big Blue (1-0-1) strike while goalie Shannon McSweeney was a force with 15 stops.

Amelia Hammerl scored a pair of goals as Brooks topped Phillips Academy, 2-0. Brooks goalie Britt Hart made two saves thanks to solid performances from defenders Kristen Sullivan, Liz Bruno, Jess Waters and Monica Berube. Big Blue (3-2) goalie Alex Farrell had four saves.
