HAVERHILL | It's not often that you'll find a coach doused with a jug of water after a loss, but that's what happened to Whittier softball coach Cheryl Begin yesterday afternoon after the Wildcats fell to Boston Latin Academy 12-5 in the preliminary round of the Division 3 North tournament.

Methuen rolls over Whittier

Sizzling Steve Saba continued to swing an impeccable bat, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs to lead Methuen over Whittier, 10-2. Saba is now seven for his last eight. Kenny Polanco also had three hits and drove in a pair to help make a winner out of David Koerner.

Kendra Hobbs drove in one run and scored another to lead Whittier to a 7-5 win over Greater Lawrence. Tiffany Mannion knocked in one run and scored twice and Emily Pomer had an RBI for the Wildcats. For the Reggies, Tatiana Perez had two hits.

Whittier sweeps

Whittier's boys defeated Greater Lawrence, 89-46. Chris Pendleton won three events for the Wildcats, helped in the 4x100 relay, and set the school record for his 20-10<1/4> long jump. Freshman Brian Stanley won two events, including the mile and 800 meters. Rogers Bencosme of Greater Lawrence won the shot put and the Reggies took the 4x400 relay.

North Andover edges Whittier

Brian Meikle improved to 2-0 on the year, pitching his second straight gem for North Andover, which edged Whittier, 2-0. Billy Della Rocca had a pair of hits for the Knights. Dillon Ryan blasted a two-run homer for the Wildcats.

Division 2 North Sectional

Six days after the New England Patriots failed to make history, the Greater Lawrence wrestling team made a lot of it yesterday at the Division 2 North Sectional at Beverly High School.

The Reggies, who are the defending Division 2 dual-meet champions, overwhelmed the 12-team field to finish first with 278 points, placing seven in the finals, crowned four champions, placed all 14 wrestlers (top six) and advanced 12 to next week's Division 2 state meet at Reading.

In Commonwealth Conference wrestling, it's definitely spelled R-E-G-G-I-E-S as Greater Lawrence proved once again yesterday at Whittier Tech by winning its seventh straight CAC meet. The Reggies have also won eight consecutive CAC regular-season titles.

Martin's big second half leads Whittier

HAVERHILL | After a tough first half of fighting through double teams, freshman Danielle Martin turned it on in the second half to finish her night with a game-high 15 points and lead Whittier to a 30-27 victory over Presentation of Mary.

Dan Gionet tournament

Whittier showed its best depth of the season and came away with the title at the 10-team Dan Gionet tournament in Pelham. The Wildcats didn't crown one champion, but they had eight placers, led by runners-up Garret Gadd (125) and Corey Chabuz (heavyweight).

Lancers prevail for title; Holt shines

It was a great day for Lancers at the Haverhill Invitational yesterday.

And it was a particularly good day for the Lawrence Lancers, who captured their second straight Haverhill Invitational title, rolling up 199<1/2> points to edge the runner-up Londonderry Lancers (174<1/2>) for top honors.

Pentucket tournament: Reggies surge past Lancers for crown

It was a Braveheart evening yesterday at the Pentucket Tournament.

Despite resting five standout starters, Greater Lawrence charged into first place to win its second title in three years with 146 points, slipping past local rival and defending champion Lawrence (141<1/2>), which led heading into the final round.

Colman paces Whittier

Whittier got a career-high 21 points from junior Damian Colman, who drilled four 3-pointers, and a solid 15-point, 12-rebound performance from Gary Littles to pull away from Notre Dame of Lawrence, 75-61. Brandon Sheehy chipped in with 9 points, 9 rebounds and 7 steals for the Wildcats (1-3). Nelson Castillo scored 20 points for Notre Dame and Eddie Contreras added 16.

Reggies break past Whittier

After a bumpy start to the season, the Greater Lawrence girls took a step in the right direction yesterday afternoon.

After a 52-29 Commonwealth Conference win over Whittier, 10th-year coach Tricia Fleming, whose last two squads went 22-4 and 17-7, respectively, believes the Reggies can do much more.

HAVERHILL | After a season of late-game setbacks, John Tricomi and his Whittier teammates wanted to take care of business right away yesterday.

"We set the tone early," said the senior linebacker following the Wildcats 49-12 rout of Cathedral that started when he took a fumble 34 yards into the end zone for an early score.

Whittier looking to finish Cathedral series in style

Whittier Tech coach Kevin Bradley figures this is the final Thanksgiving meeting between the Wildcats and Cathedral High in Boston.

"It looks like this will be it," said Bradley. "Now, we just have to find the right team to play on Thanksgiving." Cathedral, which plays in the Division 4 Catholic Central Small, brings a 5-5 mark into this one. The Cats have pushed around the Panthers, who did play the 2006 Super Bowl-bound Whittier as tough as anyone a year ago.

After Lynn Tech returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown to end the first half, then opened the second half with a 55-yard drive for the go-ahead TD, the youthful Wildcats could have buckled.

Kickoff return defeats Whittier

HAVERHILL | Greater Lowell slipped past Whittier Tech in a fumble-filled Saturday morning contest. As rain fell steadily, both sides struggled to keep their footing and their hold on the ball. When the final seconds ticked away the Wildcats were on the losing end, 21-20.

Lawrence blanks Whittier

Lawrence beat Whittier 3-0 with a pair of goals from Francesco Cuesta and another from Edwin Gutierrez. The Lancers defense was led by Kelvyn Rangel, and Eric Abarca, Oscar Mora and Nelson Nicolsond played well for Lawrence. Whittier keeper Andy Lesiczka stopped 13 in the loss.

Wildcats shutout by Shawsheen

It's hard to stop what you know nothing about.

That's the lesson Whittier Tech learned yesterday as the Wildcats fell to Shawsheen Valley, 20-0. Last week, the Rams had to plug running back Cory Foss into the backfield due to a rash of injuries. In his first high school game, the sophomore torched Chelsea for 135 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Yesterday, it was more of the same as Foss ran over the Wildcats for 149 yards on 20 carries and a TD.

He had just watched his young Wildcats come up with big play after big play, only to be answered by Manchester Essex magic man Pat Orlando.

Lawrence edges Whittier

Francesco Cuesta scored twice and Lucy Francisco added another goal as Lawrence clipped Whittier, 3-2. Edwin Gutierrez had two assists for the Lancers (2-10-2) and Nick Lopez made eight saves in the win.

Hornets look to avenge last year's loss to physical Whittier

The Manchester Essex football team will have revenge on its mind Saturday when it faces off against Whittier Tech at Endicott College (5:30).

The Wildcats blew out the Hornets 44-8 last season. But this season things should be different. The Hornets come in with a 4-1 record, while Whittier is 2-3 and both teams come into tomorrow's contest on a one-game winning streak. Last week the Hornets defeated Greater Lowell 23-22, while Whittier knocked off Chelsea 22-18.

HAVERHILL | After three straight losses, Craig Eaton and the senior class had a message for the rest of the Whittier Tech football team.

"We got them together and said we are sick of losing," said Eaton. "We said that we had to attack and we had to win this one."

Georgetown turns the tables on Whittier

HAVERHILL | The raucous blue and white celebration at midfield at the conclusion of yesterday's Whittier Tech-Georgetown football game was befitting of the kind of outbursts you might see after a Thanksgiving game or a December playoff contest.

North Shore beats Whittier

Tim Gil and Joel D'Ambrosio each scored twice as North Shore Tech beat Whittier 5-0. Mike Silva also had a terrific game for the Bulldogs, scoring a goal and assisting on another.

Reggies survive slugfest, defeat Whittier

ANDOVER | The torch was passed in Commonwealth Conference football yesterday, but it was far from an easy transfer. In a battle royal before around 300 sun-soaked fans at Gleason Field, a near school-record rushing effort from Nate Adames and an athletic late TD run from quarterback Jonathan Delossantos lifted Greater Lawrence to a satisfying 29-20 victory over defending champ Whittier.

Whittier falls at Narragansett

BALDWINVILLE | Knotted at 16-16 in the second quarter, Whittier Tech saw Narragansett Regional High run off 32 points and dominate in a 48-16 win.

It was a tough night overall for the Whittier community as volunteer assistant coach Fred Bradley, the father of head coach Kevin Bradley, was rushed to Gardner Hospital minutes before the game.

Emerson stars in big Rockport win

Michael Emerson scored a goal and assisted on another, leading Rockport to a 4-0 win over Whittier. Andreas Contreras, Ethan Clarkson and Bob Tibert assisted on the other Rockport goals. Colby Osier and Keady Segal combined for eight saves in the shutout.

Coach's Corner: Whittier's Kevin Bradley

Kevin Bradley is a football man through and through. The Whittier Tech coach is no less excited about the sport today than he was during his days as a schoolboy star at Methuen High.

Last Saturday, his Wildcats, who are coming off a trip to the Division 3 EMass. Super Bowl, opened with a 36-32 victory over Charlestown.

Reggies undone by turnovers in loss to Whittier

HAVERHILL | Whittier notched a number of season firsts against Greater Lawrence yesterday.

The Wildcats were shut out in the second half. They suffered their first turnovers of the season. They punted the ball for the first time. And the Reggie offense outgained Whittier in the final 22 minutes, 77 yards to 75.
