Zach Karalis celebrated his birthday with a team-high 14 points as North Andover fought off host Hamilton-Wenham, 71-58.

Eric Riedel won the 300 (36.74) and Brendan Varney won the 600 (1:26.71) as North Andover boys placed second at the CAL meet at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Julia Titone scored only two points but she played terrifice defense with seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks as North Andover girls basketball won 50-34 over Hamilton-Wenham.

Andover's girls gymnastics team completed a perfect (14-0) regular season by defeating North Andover, Peabody and Marblehead in a quad-meet. Courtney Carver and Jenny Coneeny finished second and third in the all-around while Jesse Livingston won both the vault and bars. North Andover's freshman Nicole Stevens had an impressive 9.6 winning score in the floor and also was first in the beam and came away as the all-around winner with a 36.95. The floor and all-around scores are personal-best performances. Andover and North Andover will compete in the MVC and CAL meets Saturday.

BEVERLY — On a day when most results went as predicted, Central Catholic’s Ben Tavitian pulled off the biggest upset.

Seeded third entering the Division 2 North Sectional, the Raider senior was last night’s only winner not seeded either first or second. While he might not have been considered a premeet favorite, Tavitian breezed into the finals, needing fewer than 3 minutes to record a pair of pins and earn a spot in the title match where he posted his third fall of the day in 2:34 over top-seeded Peter Salem of Dracut.

Pam Coufos and Morgan Lumb each had seven assists to lead North Andover girls basketball 63-37 over North Reading.

Julia Titone added 13 points for the Scarlet Knights (8-6). 

Zach Karalis scored a game-best 26 points and added to it with 10 rebounds and 10 assists as North Andover ran past North Reading, 76-61. Isaiah Nelsen added 20 points and Jimmy Warden had 14 for the 13-1 Knights.

Derek Hunter and Dan Rivet each scored two goals while Mike Cusack, Jake Silk and Rick O'Connor each added two assists to help North Andover boys hockey win 4-2 over Amesbury-Whittier. 

North Andover's wrestling team tuned up for Saturday's Division 2 sectional with a 49-21 rout of Masconomet, which won the Cape Ann League Open last Saturday when the Knights (17-2) opted for the Methuen Tournament. John Pollard had a key 6-4 decision at 195 for the Knights. Zane Melillo returned from sickness to record a 47-second pin at 132.
