Juniors kick start Windham's season

WINDHAM — The dimensions of the soccer fields they’ll be playing on haven’t changed, but they might seem a bit more even this year for the Windham boys. With seniors on the roster for the first time at the 3-year-old school, the Jaguars relied on a talented group of juniors yesterday for a season-opening 4-1 victory over visiting Manchester West. “We do have a long way to go with what we want to do and our goals and objectives,” Windham coach Mike Hachey said. “But definitely a win is what you’re looking for out of the gates. We know it might be ugly at times — and it was. We’re excited, and it’s good to get the first one out of the way.” Although the Jaguars relied heavily on sophomores last year, they still qualified for the Division 2 playoffs in the school’s first season of varsity play. They went 6-9-2, which included a 2-1 loss to West. Windham has four seniors on the roster, but it was juniors who ignited the Jaguars yesterday. Alex Whitehead provided the lead for good in the 15th minute, scoring from 20 feet on a nice centering pass from Casey Coupe. “Last year, we were a little nervous,” said Whitehead, who scored five goals last year. “This year, it helps that we have seniors, and we have a lot of experience, and that’s made us more comfortable on the field. I think we proved last year we could compete in the division, but we always had the excuse that we didn’t have any seniors. Now we have no more excuses, so we have to prove ourselves out there.” Despite controlling the first half, outshooting the Blue Knights 7-2, Windham led just 1-0 10 minutes into the second. Considering six of the Jaguars’ nine losses last year were by one goal, it was time to see just how different — if any — things would be this season. “I think the major difference this year is experience, especially when things aren’t going quite your way,” Hachey said. “You have to pick yourself up and turn it around. We lost a lot of tight ones last year and didn’t put teams away. But certainly a year’s worth of experience helps out there.” And juniors Ulbrich and Coupe proved how mature the Jaguars have become, scoring goals fewer than 4 minutes apart for a 3-0 lead. West cut the deficit to one in the 16th minute, but senior Steve Dastous put it away on a penalty kick with 17 minutes left. The four goals were more than enough for junior goalie Andrew Pesci, who had six saves, two on free kicks when he knocked the attempts over the goal with leaping stops. Windham 4, Manchester West 1 Goals: MW — Lucas Schlickman; W — Alex Whitehead, Chris Ulbrich, Casey Coupe, Steve Dastous Assists: W — Coupe, Whitehead, Ulbrich Saves: MW — Ed Marion 8; W — Andrew Pesci 6 Manchester West (0-1):    0 1 — 1 Windham (1-0):    1 3 — 4
