Cats do it again

Record-wise, Everett (4-12) doesn't jump out at you, but it's a big school with a strong basketball tradition. So Division 3 Whittier is feeling good about itself after dumping the Division 1 Crimson Tide, 65-50. Ryan Grant and Gio Gomez came up big defensively in the fourth quarter when 17-1 Whittier outscored the visitors 17-5. Justin Reyes (20 points, 15 rebounds) and Marck Galva (12 and 11) both had double-doubles.

Andover's wrestling team won its first meet of the season, 39-37 over Everett. Shiv Chawla, Joey Solimini and Nick Marcotte all recorded pins for the Warriors and Ben Dykstra had a technical fall. Jack Reilly and James Burke had pivotal one-point decisions.

The Whittier wrestling team had seven pins while defeating Everett 48-33 to climb over the .500 mark at 11-10. Shane Surette had the quickest pin of the day, in 37 seconds at 152.

With four straight victories after center Molly Hoopes' return, and a five-game streak to date, Haverhill is on a roll.

In a 36-32 win over Everett. Hoopes had 7 points, 16 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. "Molly has a good basketball acumen, knows what's going on and makes a difference," said head coach Bob Melillo.

Destiny times two

Whittier snapped a two-game losing streak with its 3-1 volleyball victory over Everett. Destiny Jordan excelled on the back line with 25 digs, 19 service points and 6 aces, while Destiny Alicea "really grew as an offensive and defensive player" according to coach Deb Littlefield, adding 21 service points and 12 aces.

Andover rode another Dustin Hunt gem into the finals of the Peabody Baseball Tournament, dusting Everett, 8-4, last night. The sophomore Hunt went the route, spacing 10 hits and a pair of walks, while striking out three.

On her birthday, junior forward Christina Medley (season-high 25 points) drilled four straight 3-pointers on a crucial fourth-quarter run, helping Whittier come back for a 55-47 non-league victory over Division 1 Everett. Danielle Martin had 9 of her 11 points in the second-half turnaround and sophomore Josie Sanchez (12 rebounds and 3 blocks) was fierce in the paint for the Wildcats.
