'Flag' tourney set

 

Methuen Pop Warner Football is sponsoring a benefit flag football tournament this Saturday and is inviting teams to enter. The tournament will be at Ranger Field, next to the Methuen High stadium. It begins at 9 a.m., with the championship game expected to be played around 5 p.m.

Jordyn Hamilton had a goal and an assist and her goal — the 57th of her career — set a new school record as Pinkerton's field hockey team (13-1) nipped Timberlane 2-1 to wrap up the No. 1 seed for the Division 1 tournament, which gets underway next week. Linnea Testa scored the game-winner for the Astros (13-1) while Nikki Korb scored for the Owls.

Bishop Fenwick 5, Central Catholic 4

Surrendering a season-high amount of goals, Central Catholic was beaten by an upset-minded Bishop Fenwick squad, 5-4. The Raiders rebounded behind Taylor O'Neil to erase a two-goal deficit and draw even, but the sub-.500 Crusaders notched the next two goals to control the rest of the game. Bishop Fenwick came into the contest having lost seven of its last eight games including a 3-2 verdict against Central in late September.

North Andover field hockey tied Manchester Essex 0-0. Coach Courtney Breen said of Meg Foster, "She had an amazing seven saves. The final play of the game was a corner. She had a great save." The Knights defense was anchored by Julie Boshar, Maggie Silva, Dana McManus and Sara McCarthy.

Eva on the ball

Freshman Eva Toffoloni has emerged as Phillips' leading field hockey scorer this year, and she added to her accomplishments by notching both goals in a 2-1 win over Choate. Toffoloni's second score was the game-winner, coming with just 30 seconds left when she gathered in a rebound and tucked the ball past the Choate keeper.
