Ranger rebound

Methuen's softball team, which struggled last week, whipped a strong Chelmsford club 15-0 in six innings on Senior Night to improve to 13-5 entering the Methuen Tournament this weekend. Rebecca Armstrong was 3 for 5 with five RBIs and winning pitcher Sarra Bergeron, who threw a three-hitter, was also 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Abbey Carbonneau was 3 for 4 and scored twice.

Tragedy calls off games

The tragic death of senior Central Catholic senior softball player Rebecca Solomon forced the postponement of all Raiders sporting events yesterday. Athletic director Peter Paladino believes that most Central teams will resume play today. The softball team will need to make up yesterday’s game with Tewksbury and today’s scheduled game with Arlington Catholic by Monday.

Sparkling 1-hitter

Londonderry sophomore Theresa Zwart hurled a terrific one-hitter, striking out seven, as the Lancers (13-3) blanked Goffstown 5-0. Zwart helped her own cause with a pair of hits and an RBI. Nicole Williams had two hits and an RBI.

Impressive tuneup

Lawrence, in its last game before this weekend's Methuen Tournament, qualified for the state tournament by rallying past a strong Dracut club, 11-10. Luz Brenz (4 for 4) sparked a 16-hit attack for the Lancers (10-8), scoring three times and driving in two runs. Lucy Francisco was 2 for 3 and scored twice.

Great relief

Sophomore Val Bauer entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed just one hit over the last three innings as Salem (13-3) whipped Merrimack 7-2. Julia Gray (3 for 4) had a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Erica DePinto (2 for 4) also knocked in two runs.

Marissa Strangie was 3 for 5 with two runs scored for the Vikings (11-6 overall, 11-1 CAL). Gail Lebrun was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Marian Dullea logged seven innings, allowing three hits and four walks. She struck out 10.

Dramatic, Hart ending

Brooks senior Britt Hart ended her stellar high school career by doubling in classmate Kristen Sullivan (2 for 4) 3with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in a 4-3 victory over local rival Phillips Academy. Hart threw a five-hitter, striking out nine, in picking up her 52nd career win as Brooks finished the season with a fine 14-3 record.

Moral victory?

Timberlane's softball team played its best game of the year in a 1-0 loss to Alvirne. Freshman pitcher Amanda Butterfield scattered seven hits and only walked two and the Owls (1-13) played errorless balls. Unfortunately, star freshman Taylor Carbone threw a sparkling one-hitter for Alvirne.

Threes are wild for Armstrong

Rebecca Armstrong went 3 for 3 with three RBIs as Methuen narrowly defeated Billerica, 3-2. Armstrong's biggest hit came in the second inning when she smacked a two-RBI single to stake the Rangers to a 3-1 lead. Sarra Bergeron gave up just one earned run while fanning eight to improve to 11-4.

Walks doom Knights

North Andover pitchers walked 11 batters in the fourth and fifth innings alone, translating to nine runs for PMA which led to the Panthers' big 10-9 win. Chris Byron walked just three and struck out eight to earn the win.
