Brenna Logan had a personal-best high jump of 4-6, winning the event for the first time ever as Pentucket dealt Newburyport its first loss, 47-39. "This was an exciting meet that came down to the last event," said Sachems coach Steve Derro. "We were both fighting illness and injuries but both teams fought extremely hard through that adversity."

Running her first 2-mile of the indoor season, Jenna Crawford not only won but qualified for states to highlight North Reading track's tough 44-42 loss to Masconomet.

Emily Freeman had a personal best shot put throw of 33-4 1/2 for Methuen in the Rangers' 55-30 loss to Billerica.

North Reading junior Emily Murray set a school record in the shot put with a 39-4 1/2 throw in the Hornets' 53-33 loss to North Reading.

Senior Deirdre Martyn, who played basketball until this year, won the 1,000 meters in a fine 3:15.3 and junior Jenna Smolag, a gymnast the previous two years, won the 55 meters in 7.6 to lead North Andover past Chelmsford. Danielle Voke ran a PR 12:16.2 to win the 2-mile.

Maggie Carey and Taylor DePalo each won an individual event and ran on the winning relay as Central Catholic blitzed Haverhill 50-35.

Merrimack College freshman Justin Hussar was named the Hockey East Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week  after netting his first career multi-point game, getting a goal and assist in a 4-2 win over Army. Hussar leads Merrimack freshmen with six points this season. Merrimack is idle until December 29-30 when it takes on Princeton and Union in the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont.

Pentucket's Marissa Porter finished second in the 600 (1:44.38) at the MSTCA Winter Festival track meet at the Reggie Lewis Center yesterday to qualify for the CAL meet and States.
