Hyvonen shines

Mikka Hyvonen took seventh in the giant slalom and fifth in the slalom to lead the Astros to a fifth-place finish Tuesday at the Division 1 state ski championships. Owen Sezgin was the No. 2 Astro on the day. Londonderry's Joshua Galluzzo was second in the GS and seventh in the slalom. Patrick Healey took a 15th and a 23rd to lead Timberlane.

Denoncourt, Cavallaro take first

Andover's Jason Denoncourt and North Andover's Maria Cavallaro were the top skiiers on the hill during Wednesday's Interscholastic Meet at Bradford, taking first in the boys and girls races respectively. Denoncourt clocked a combined time of 48.29, while Cavallaro's time of 49.08 was nearly four seconds faster than the next best girls time and would have been good enough for second in the boys race as well.

Knights beat Andover

North Andover beat Andover, 88-47, in a meet which had been cancelled four times (Jan 24, Feb. 7, Feb. 9, Feb. 13). The Cooperstein twins powered the Knights while Jason Denoncourt of Andover was the day's top overall performer.

Milestone day on the hill

The local ski teams got an experience three decades in the making, as Thursday marked the first time their league ran slalom in the regular season meet in over 30 years thanks in large part to the addition of new brush base gates that don't pop out, similar to the ones used at the Olympics. Haverhill's Filip Matijevic was the top local finisher (fourth, 23.41), followed by North Andover's Jon Cooperstein (fifth, 23.45) and Cole Masterson (sixth, 23.53).

Denoncourt flies ahead

Andover's Jason Denoncourt was the fastest man on the hill, taking first in Tuesday's skiing opener with a time of 20.55. North Andover's Ben Cooperstein took eighth overall (21.02) and North Andover's Sam Naftal took 10th (21.10).

North Andover placed second to St. John's Prep at the Interscholastic ski meet. The Knights were led by Connor and Cole Masterson in fifth and 11th, respectively. Andover's Jason Denoncourt placed fourth.

At the Division 2 States, Windham's Brett Curtis placed third in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom and teammate Matt Kuczynski grabbed 11th in the GS.

Warriors, Knights earn wins

Jason Denoncourt took fourth overall in 21.89 as Andover skiing closed out the regular season with a 131-4 victory over Austin Prep. North Andover's Connor Masterson was ninth overall, helping the Knights beat Haverhill (133-2).

Morgan Magic

Morgan Seale, Aidan Kallery and Alex Martin shined for Haverhill, which rolled past Austin Prep, 78-55. North Andover downed Andover 78-57. The top local finishers were Andover's Jason Denoncourt in fifth, North Andover's Jason Masterson in sixth and Andover's Neil Resnik in 12th.

Halls of Fame

Travis and Austin Hall placed third and fifth, respectively, in the giant slalom as Timberlane won a 10-team meet last Friday.  Other heavy hitters for Timberlane were Cam Collins in 11th, Sam Kappler in 12th and Wes Lisi 16th. Pinkerton's Caleb Easton took fifth overall. Nicole Gonya of Pinkerton won the girls race.
