Senior National Wrestling: Dearden advances to Round of 16

Three-time New England champion Trevor Dearden of Salem got off to a terrific start at the National High School Senior Championships yesterday.

Dearden advanced to the round of 16 with two major decisions at 125 pounds. He defeated Utah's Nick Flores 10-1 in his first match and then overwhelmed four-time Wisconsin state champion Bobby Wunnicke 16-4.

Reggies cap perfect season with another state crown

Thanks to an impressive 1-2 punch, Greater Lawrence retained its Division 2 dual-meet state title last night, extending its winning streak to 50 straight meets.

The Reggies used their well-known murders' row in the lower weights to stagger North Attleboro with a powerful jab, zooming to a 23-0 lead after just four weight classes. Then they counterpunched with a crew of unsung heroes to hold off North Attleboro, 36-32, in a showdown of unbeatens.

NH Division 1 state meet

The dice came up with a pair of nines for the Timberlane wrestling team at the Division 1 state meet yesterday, and they were big winners.

The Owls, thanks to a shocking 9-for-9 performance in the semifinals earlier in the day, cruised to their ninth straight Division 1 crown in resounding fashion.

Division 2 state meet

According to coach Tony Sarkis, yesterday was one of the biggest day in the rising history of the Greater Lawrence wrestling program.

The Reggies had three state champions (Miguel Guzman at 112, Francesco Ortiz at 119 and Chris DelaRosa at 152), put another wrestler in the final (103-pounder Matt Buco), and had seven wrestlers place in the top six. The three state titles and seven wrestlers headed to All-States (Saturday at Salem) are both school records.

Division 2 North Sectional

Six days after the New England Patriots failed to make history, the Greater Lawrence wrestling team made a lot of it yesterday at the Division 2 North Sectional at Beverly High School.

The Reggies, who are the defending Division 2 dual-meet champions, overwhelmed the 12-team field to finish first with 278 points, placing seven in the finals, crowned four champions, placed all 14 wrestlers (top six) and advanced 12 to next week's Division 2 state meet at Reading.

Division 1 North Sectionals

The seeds had Andrik Cruz primed for a third straight sectional final disappointment.

Cruz would have none of that. The Methuen High senior, wrestling at 145 pounds, made his third North championship try a winning one, heading up an area contingent of two champs and 15 places moving on to the Division 1 North championships in Bridgewater next weekend.
