With 55 members, Marblehead has one of its largest bands ever this year.
The band performs during halftime of the football games, at an occasional basketball or lacrosse game, and also at the annual holiday and Memorial Day parades.
Band director Kenneth Warren said the band will compete in a festival in New York in April, and individual members will take part in district and state competitions. But otherwise, the emphasis is on fun and learning rather than competition, he said.
"The competitiveness can be kind of strenuous on students," Warren said. "A lot of my kids also play sports."
