WEST NEWBURY — No matter how the rest of his day played out, a little revenge made it a “Sweet 16” for Pentucket’s Pat Freiermuth.

The quarterback threw a touchdown to fellow sophomore Liam Sheehy and, from his linebacker position, helped lead a dominating defense effort that allowed just 43 total yards as the Sachems celebrated Freiermuth’s 16th birthday with a 16-0 domination over North Reading on Saturday.

“I don’t know how I am going to top this,” said Freiermuth after the game. “This was a great birthday gift.”

It was a payback victory for Pentucket, which was upset by the Hornets a season ago — a loss that ruining the Sachems’ perfect regular season — a year after the Green and White dropped a heartbreaker in North Reading.

“This was definitely a big game for us,” said star linebacker Josh Wesolowski. “That loss last year hurt really bad. So it is huge to come in and get some revenge on them.”

The game started in bizarre fashion, as North Reading did not arrive until just before 2 p.m. for a scheduled 1 p.m. kickoff due to a reported misunderstanding. That left the Sachems, who had already warned up, sitting in the locker room.

“I was a mess waiting for the game to start,” said Wesolowski. “I don’t sit around well, I get really anxious, and it was torture. So I give big props to my team to the way we responded.”

Once the Sachems finally did hit the field, the defense was ready to dominate.

Pentucket allowed North Reading and its run-heavy single-wing attack just 40 yards on 22 carries, and the Hornets completed just one pass for 3 yards.

“When you watch this offense on film is looks intimidating because you sometimes have four blockers coming at you at once,” said defensive back Andrew Noyes. “But once we got on the field we realized that we could beat them. We have been moving players around on defense, and it looks like we found the right mix here.”

The Sachems allowed North Reading just two first downs in the game — both in the first half — and never allowed them to cross the 50-yard-line.

“We were getting to the ball and making big hits,” said defensive back Jeff Porter, who intercepted a pass. “The scout gave us a great look so we were ready. Noah Mahli really sealed the deal with that huge hit at the goal line.”

Wesolowski continued his dominant senior season with 12 tackles while Freiermuth made 10 stops and Liam Sheehy added 10 tackles of his own.

The Sachems also had more than enough offense to make that dominant defense count.

Porter (game-high 107 rushing yards) gave Pentucket the lead late in the first when he kicked the first field goal of his high school career, a 27-yard boot.

Freiermuth then added to the advantage with 4:27 to go in the third as he fired a pass to Sheehy for a score.

Senior running back Jack Richard then closed out the Hornets midway through the fourth, taking his first rush of the game in for a 17-yard score.

“Whenever I get the ball I am going to do everything I can to make something happen and get in,” said Richard. “I feel like this game showed out character. After a couple of tough losses we beat a team that had beaten us two years in a row. Hopefully this will give us momentum.”
