Kerrin Thomas sent Grace Stanton in all alone midway through the first half and the junior found the back of the net and Haverhill held on to blank Brookline 1-0 in the first round of the Division 1 North girls soccer tourney.

The game was far from over, though. Marlayna Buco made 12 saves for the 8-5-5 Hillies. Molly Thomas made the play of the game to save the day in the second half.

"She headed it off the line and cleared it. It was unbelievable," said Hillie coach Fred Tarbox.

Buco and the defense were stellar against Brookline, which finished 9-6-4. The Hussein sisters, Bianca and Basema, and Lindsey Fitzpatrick also shined in the midfield, particularly late in the game.

The Hillies showed their depth as all 19 field players contributed.

Haverhill hopes to play giant-killers at 17-0-1 Acton-Boxboro on Thursday in the North quarterfinals.

A-B features returning All-Scholastics in BU-bound defender Pietra Sweeney, Bryant-bound midfielder Alex Spangler and UMass Lowell recruit Maddie Walsh.
