WRENTHAM — Methuen’s boys cross country team has been up and down in Eastern Mass. championship races in the past, but Saturday the Rangers were up.

Way up.

In a rugged Division 1 field, the Rangers finished third with 85 points, just four behind Cambridge and five behind MVC foe Lowell.

Junior Jeff Reddy led the way, finishing third in an excellent 15:36 on the Wrentham 5K course, right on the heels of Peabody sophomore Marcelo Rocha (15:35). Xaverian’s Lucas Paxter won in 15:23.

Also running a strong race was Matt Marchand in 13th while John St. Hilaire (16:24), Devin Allen and Cam Pavao came in a pack at 20-24-25 with a spread of 11 seconds.

“It was an amazing day for us,” said Methuen coach Bill James, whose team qualified for next week’s Division 1 All-State meet at Franklin Park. “Pretty much everyone ran the best race of their lives.”

Of particular note was the performance of Allen, who lost a shoe at the half-mile mark and ran the rest of the race with just one shoe.

Knights pass the cut

North Andover’s big trio led the way as the Knights qualified for All-State by placing fourth in Division 2.

Zach Frahlich was the first Knight to finish, in seventh in 16:21.70, while Marty Conrad was 9th and Chris Lord, coming back from mononucleosis, was 15th. Freshman Cam Leonard was 40th for Central, which came in ninth overall.

Reggies qualify pair

For the first time, Greater Lawrence qualified two runners for the All-State meet. Yosvaldy Tejeda advanced for the second straight year, finishing eighth (16:38.60) while surging junior Dylan Colon will join him in the Division 2 race after he came in 10th with a 16:41.10. The Reggies finished 12th as a team.

Demeule takes second

Pentucket senior Alex Demeule will probably never beat Pentucket ace Nick Carleo, but he continues to beat just about everyone else. He finished second overall with a time of 16:20.3 to pace the Sachems to sixth in the 25-team EMass. Division 5 field. Jake O’Connell was sixth overall for North Reading, which came in 10th.

Andover girls take 8th

Andover’s girls led area teams at the EMass. meets Saturday, finishing eighth in a strong Division 1 field. Sarah Rothmann (19:33.1), Chantal Kellerd (19:35.4) and Caroline Wacome (19:39.5) finished 13-14-16 and will all compete in next week’s Division 1 All-State meet at Franklin Park. The top local finishers in Division 2 were North Andover’s Mia Drury in 23rd and Central’s Tiffany Simione in 25th.

Austin Prep’s Stephanie Casaletto of Groveland was fifth in Division 6 with a time of 19:24.7.
