Wildcats come of age

After scoring a mere 26 points its first four games, Whittier exploded for its second win of the season with a 42-20 victory at Chelsea.

"I'm proud of the way we're getting better every week," coach Kevin Bradley said. "The coaches are coaching, and the players are starting to gel."

If the Wildcats continue rushing the ball the way they did last night, however, the win over Chelsea might just be the beginning.

With 20 different players getting at least one carry, Whittier piled up 672 yards on 81 rushes. Shane Mambro led the way with 162 yards on 14 carries. The senior back went 76 yards for a score on the first play from scrimmage and also scored on a 72-yard kickoff return to start the second half.

Mambro's first score kicked off a first-half siege that saw the Wildcats take a 28-7 lead into halftime.

Other rushers of note included Hunter McKinnon, who went 78 yards on just two carries.

"The young kids are getting better every game," Bradley said. "They're all getting their experience and getting better all the time."
