Pentucket's Murphy shines at D2 States

WESTFIELD — It was a tough day for local runners Saturday at the All-State meets at Westfield, and particularly for North Andover junior Lilly Voke.

Voke, the Cape Ann league champion, was in the top 15 runners in the Division 1 race and in good position at the mile mark before tripping over a root and taking a hard fall.

Voke was unable to recover quickly and slipped to 82nd place.

“It was a hazardous course and a lot of runners went down,” said North Andover coach Rick Dellechiaie. “It’s too bad because she has had such a good year, but at least she’ll have next year.”

In her place, Haverhill junior Jenna Solimine led all local Division 1 girl runners, finishing 40th in 19:19.10 on Westfield’s 5K course. Teammate Jillian Lemieux was 44th in 19:24.23 and North Andover junior Kim Carroll was 46th with a personal-best 5K time of 19:27.20.

The top local girl runner on the day was Groveland’s Stephanie Casaletto of Austin Prep. She was 20th in the Division 2 race in 18:58.00

On the boys side, junior Nick Murphy of Pentucket was the top local runner, finishing 21st in the Division 2 race with a time of 16:25.06, pacing the Sachems to 11th as a team. Central sophomore Evan Fagan was the top local in the Division 1 race, taking 52nd in 16:26.63

As expected, Lowell’s boys ran away with the Division 1 team title for the second straight year, scoring 64 points, easily outdistancing runner-up St. John’s of Shrewsbury (135). In the Division 1 girls race, Needham nipped Lincoln-Sudbury by a single point.
