There was only one debate for the Pinkerton cross country program Saturday afternoon at the state championships at Derryfield Park.
Who was more impressive — the boys or the girls, both of whom romped to Division 1 titles in record-setting fashion?
The boys won their third straight title with just 35 points, 63 fewer than runner-up Londonderry while the girls won by an even larger margin, scoring 30 points, which was 86 better than runner-up Bishop Guertin.
It could be that the girls deserved the biggest spotlight while winning their first Division 1 championship since 2006. Led by stunning freshman Jordan Vaillancourt (19:01.9, the fastest Pinkerton time for a freshman on the course by 50 seconds), who was running on the rugged 3.1-mile course for the first time in her career, the Astros showed a remarkable pack, finishing 3-4-5-8-10.
Right behind Jordan was sister Ariel Vaillancourt (19:04.2) with sophomore Maison D’Amelio just two seconds back, freshman Ciara April in eighth at 19:17.9 and Morgan Sansing 10th at 19:20.9.
That’s a tremendous 19-second spread between the first and fifth runners.
“That’s the best we’ve ever had and it was just amazing to see,” said Pinkerton coach Amy Bernard. “The girls kept going back and forth among themselves. It was just a great day. This team has worked hard, stayed positive and focused.
“We look forward to the Meet of Champions next Saturday where we will battle nationally-ranked Coe-Brown for the state’s top spot.”
Kimball nips Sevilla
Only one thing could have made Saturday’s third straight Division 1 crown more satisfying for Pinkerton, which has now won nine championships under 34th-year head coach Mike Clark.
Nico Sevilla went all out to win the individual championship but came up just short of defending champion Liam Kimball of Timberlane.
Kimball finished in 15:52.0 to just barely hold off Sevilla (15:52.8), who made up ground the last 100 meters. Former soccer player Noah Davis of the Astros was third in 15:57.2, right ahead of Londonderry’s Cameron Dickson (15:59.2). Davis was winning the race at one point.
Pinkerton’s Jeff Reddy finished eighth (16:16.8) with Tom Hanlon 10th (16:19.3) and Sam Lanternier 12th (16:23.3), providing a 31-second spread. Sixth and seventh runners Pat Bastek (14th) and Calvin Graves (20th) were close behind.
“This was just an historic day,” said Clark. “It was just unbelievable. In the history of the Long Red Line, this is the first time we’ve had seven guys in the top 20 and seven guys under 17 minutes.
“The depth on this team is something else. It’s just been an incredible year and it’s just starting.”
Pinkerton will take aim at its second straight Meet of Champions title next week and then attempt to make noise at the New England meet.
Complementing Dickson for Londonderry were Noah Schrank in 11th, Jared Kane in 17th and Josh Wasserman in 23rd.
Timberlane finished eighth as a team to qualify for next week’s Meet of Champions. Niall Kimball was 35th and Jacob Huberdeau 37th.
Windham, Pelham qualify
It was a big day in the Division 2 race for the Windham girls and the Pelham boys. Each qualified for the Meet of Champions.
Windham, led by Susie Poore in seventh (19:19.3), came in sixth to qualify for the second straight year. It was a 16-second PR for Poore at Derryfield.
Laura Pomeroy was 42nd for the Jaguars while Hannah Harootian was the third runner in 60th.
In the Division 2 boys race, Pelham came in seventh as junior Allan Vallante was 13th (17:01.1), sophomore Cameron Starr came in 15th and sophomore Jacob Dorman was 30th.
Windham’s Peter Caron was the top local finisher, taking eighth in 16:46.8. Junior Lane Thompson was 19th to lead Sanborn.
