LONDONDERRY — The dynasty that Pinkerton teams have built over the past decade still looms tall over New Hampshire girl’s gymnastics, but for 2016, the crown belongs to Londonderry.

Unbeaten Pinkerton, having won two state championships in a row and five out of the past six, was the clear favorite.

It came down to five-hundredths of a point, as host Londonderry finished with a 137.80 to Pinkerton’s 137.75. Pelham took fifth and Salem was sixth.

Derryfield's Tori Sipes of Windham won the all-around.

“It’s surreal,” said Londonderry head coach Heather Tuden. “I knew these girls had it in them. I knew coming in here if we hit everything we could control, then we would be fine.

“Coming in, everyone was comparing us. We had two meets against each other, one of which was the meet last week where we sat our starters (Pinkerton 135.0, Londonderry 129.05).

I told the girls coming into today that they’re all amazing, and that no matter what happened they’re the reason why I love to coach.”

Pinkerton held a slim lead the entire meet including 101.425 to 100.85 heading into the last event. Both teams finished the day with the floor routine.

The Lancers knew they could take the lead and come away with the championship with a fantastic performance – which they accomplished.

Senior Jill McIntire placed first with in the floor with a 9.4, breaking the previous school record. A previous school record held by her coach. Mira Kutney actually went right before McIntire, and tied Tuden’s record of 9.35.

McIntire was the star, finishing third in the all-around.

The Lancers went first and vaulted into the lead. Pinkerton was up next and couldn’t quite match it.

Tuden said of McIntire, “She’s been improving every single meet. This meet was hers to hit everything.”

While Tuden watched her record fall, she managed to etch herself into Lancer history once more.

Winning the state championship broke a 15-year drought for the Lancers. Their last championship came in 2001, when Tuden was a sophomore on the team.

“It feels fantastic,” said Tuden. “It’s nice knowing that the girls I’m coaching are the ones breaking the records. Its two completely different feelings as a coach and player.

“As a gymnast I remember just working off adrenaline. You get caught up cheering for your teammates and performing. But as a coach there’s more a sense of pride. Watching these young women grow not only as gymnasts but as people is such a different feeling.

“I told most of their parents that I didn’t sleep much last night because I was so nervous for them, and that never happened when I performed.”

Pinkerton by no means gave the championship away. As a team, the Astros finished first in the vault, bars and beam.

“It comes down to a toe-point,” said Pinkerton head coach Chelsie Burland. “It’s frustrating, but we had a great season. We had a great three events, but it came down to the floor and the judges liked their routines better than ours. We qualified for New Englands though, and we’re going to have a fire under our butts.”

Both squads will compete in the New Englands March 12 at Dracut High School.
