Haverhill came this-close to one of the great upsets in school history but the Hillies fell in an epic first-round Division 2 North hockey game.
Haverhill coach Joe Roberts lamented, "Sooooooo close!!"
Unbeaten Marblehead, which improved to 22-0-1, got a goal from James McCarthy with 4:33 left in regulation and Drew Cioffi with 3:35 left.
After two scoreless OTs, Marblehead won it in a shootout.
Haverhill, which got a performance from keeper Mike Gleason which will be talked about for a long, long time, finished up at 9-10-2. He was credited with 46 saves in regulation and 64 overall.

As unlikely as it seemed, Haverhill had that historic postseason run to the North finals last year, beating the No. 6, 3 and 2 seeds. Haverhill was the No. 11 seed. Both years coach Joe Roberts' club needed big late-season runs just to make the playoffs.
