GEORGETOWN- Senior captain Ryan Slack slapped an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Georgetown High baseballers over Newburyport, 3-2.
Freshman Brendan Willis, who singled and stole second, scored the game-winner for the Royals, who found themselves in another tightly contested ballgame after Wednesday's nine-inning loss to Pentucket.
“We just had to turn the page,” said Royals’ first year head coach Phil Desilets on Wednesday’s tough loss. “We can’t dwell on the past. If you’re looking in the past than you can’t see what is in front of you.”
Georgetown got the scoring going early, bringing home their first two runs of the game in the first inning. Senior captain Mike Goddu roped an RBI double and sophomore Kyle Greenler added an RBI single.
Royals’ pitcher Jack Walsh did an excellent job of limiting the Clippers. Walsh, who pitched a complete game, threw 73 pitches on the day.
“Losing [senior captain] Ritchie [Gray] for this game hurt, but we had to pull together as a team,” said Desilets. “Everyone needed to step up, stay focused, and pay attention to the little things. We were able to do that and it was a huge team win.”
