HAVERHILL — Looking for a third consecutive 100-meter title at the Ottaviani Invitational, Trinity Tapper entered Saturday’s race with leg problems.

By the time she finished, the North Andover junior knew she had a legitimate rival for a teammate.

Continuing the success she had indoors, freshman speedster Ava Nassar knocked off Tapper and the remainder of the field, running 13.07 and besting Molly Golden of Lowell (13.18) and Tapper (13.23).

“I was just trying to get good starts in and finish strong,” Nassar said. “I didn’t really have a certain goal or anything, but I did want to do good.”

Both also placed in the long jump, with Nassar finishing fifth, just ahead of Tapper. They also ran legs on the third-place 4-by-100 relay team.

“It was kind of an awkward moment there,” North Andover coach Rick Dellechiaie said of the 100-meter finish. “I knew that one of them could win the race. It would have been nice to see Trinity win three in a row, but coming into the race, I think Ava was just in a better position physically.

“So it was going to be a bitter-sweet moment ... The silver lining is (Tapper) lost to a teammate. We talked about the inter-squad competition, and it’s going to make them both better.

We’re looking for big things from both of them.”

While the victory might have surprised many, Nassar seemed unfazed.

“She’s been doing better than me during the indoor season, but this week has been pretty close,” Nassar said, referring to Tapper. “This doesn’t really (change season) goals, but I’d like to qualify for freshman (nationals) at some point in the season.”

Tapper didn’t let the defeat dampen a solid day despite the injury.

“I won it the past two years, so I thought I’d push through and try to win again,” said Tapper, who is battling shin splints. “But I want to see (Nassar) succeed. Honestly, she’s very sweet.

I’m going to try to take a break during (spring vacation) and see if (the shins) can heal.”

CENTRAL SWEEPS

After finishing second to Pinkerton each of the previous two years, the Central Catholic boys blazed to a team title with 137 points and six champions. Pinkerton, which had five winners, was second with 110. Haverhill was fourth with 41.

The Raider girls defended their title, eclipsing the field with 76 points, while Pentucket and Lowell tied for second with 64. Haverhill was fifth with 55.

SUPER SAIGE

Pentucket senior Saige Tudisco was named the girls’ outstanding performer after a solid start to her outdoor season.

The University of New Hampshire recruit repeated in the long jump (17-2.75), breezed to a 200-meter win in a meet-record 26.33 and also ran the second leg on the second-place 4-by-400 relay.

“I don’t run (the 200) usually,” said Tudisco, the reigning E-T MVP for both the outdoor and indoor seasons. “I only do it in the heptathlons, so it was just for fun. I didn’t expect a meet record, but I’m happy with the time and the performance. I may run it a little more now.”

RAIDER DOMINANCE

Central Catholic’s Gregory Desrosiers was named the boys’ outstanding performer after winning the 400-meter hurdles (57.49) and placing second in the triple jump behind Joron Harrell of Pinkerton.

“It was a good race,” Desrosiers said. “When the race started, I stuttered on my first hurdle and I stumbled. So, I was kind of worried during the race, but I was able to calm myself down and get my rhythm going. I was surprised (to be named outstanding performer), but it’s an honor.”

Teammate Kalvin Guillermo repeated in the shot put with a throw of 51-4, three feet farther than runner-up Kaleal Cerafici of Pinkerton.

“I had a shaky second flight, fouling on my first two throws but I finally got it out there,” said Guillermo, who is headed to Trinity University. “I wasn’t doing so good, but that 51 on the first throw (in the finals) got me excited. I wasn’t expecting much because of the weather.”

Other Central victories came via Bret Edwards (high jump), Sam Wall (pole vault), Anthony Mendonca (long jump), and the 4-by-800 relay team.

KUDOS TO KITCHINGS

Jayla Kitchings led a strong Hillie showing, winning the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.63, almost a full second ahead of the 16.5 posted by runner-up Haley Lightbody of Reading. The junior also finished second in the long jump and ran a leg on the 4-by-100 team which finished fourth.

“I just tried to keep warm and do my best,” Kitchings said. “I just went out there and attacked the hurdles.”

DEFENDERS TRIUMPH

Seven of the eight returning champs in the field successfully defended.

In addition to Tudisco on the girls side, North Andover’s Grace Fallon repeated in the discus with a toss of 115-07.

Pinkerton had three boys repeat led by Jadyn Ruimwijk in the 200 (22.86). Noah Woodman also won the 400 (52.0) while Harrell conquered the triple jump (41-03.5). The other Astro title was provided by the 4-by-100 relay.

The remaining boys’ defender was discus winner Matt McDermott (158-05).

LOCAL WINNERS

Pentucket sophomore Peter Lopata won the mile with a fine time of 4:33.24, and the Haverhill boys won the 4-by-400 relay.

In girls action, Central’s Carla Bouchrouche won the 400 hurdles, Haverhill also saw Gabrielle DeRoche win the mile and Alexandra Auguste the high jump. Pinkerton had wins in the 400 from Amelia Graves, who also finished third in the javelin, and the 800 from Macy Graves. Methuen captured the 4-by-400 relay.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Windham’s Robby St. Laurent finished second in the 2-mile in a school record 10:06.79, topping a mark set by Peter Caron two years ago. ... In maybe the best race of the day, Pinkerton’s Adam Spencer was out leaned at the finish line of the 110-meter hurdles in a photo finish with Dracut’s Jovan Aigbekaen.
