Brooks handled by Governor's in opener

NEWBURY — Brooks couldn't contain a talented Governor's Academy team, falling in its season opener 42-15.

Newburyport's Quin Stott was the star for Governor's. The senior running back piled up four rushing touchdowns, including the first two of the game to help Governor's open up an eventual 22-0 lead.

Big seventh

Trailing by a run heading to the top of the seventh, Brooks plated four and then hung on to earn a 6-4 win over Governor's. Emmet Janney went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and John Fritz got his sixth save. According to a tweet from coach Andy Campbell, it was the first time the senior class had beaten Governor's.

Last second win

Governor's Academy girls lacrosse got a goal from Meghan Umansky with three seconds left to beat Tabor Academy 13-12. Sarah Moore led the Govs with three goals and two assists in the win.

Vaulting up

Governor's Academy's Julia Russolillo set a new school record in the pole vault on Wednesday, clearing 9-0 to place first against Milton Academy and the Windsor School. Becca Willis also won the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, D.J Frechette won the long jump and high jump for the boys, and Otto Laakkonen won the 200 and 400-meter runs as well.

Amesbury's Jared Dupere went 5 for 5 for Governor's Academy in Wednesday's 9-7 win over St. Mark's. He also scored two runs and had an RBI, and Newburyport's Quinn Stott went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI as well.

Newburyport's Quinn Stott went 1 for 2 with two runs scored to help the Governor's Academy baseball team knock off Roxbury Latin 3-2 on Saturday. Kevin Lucey also went 3 for 4 with an RBI and pitcher Shane Smith allowed one earned run over five innings while striking out eight.

Dominant Doyle

Governor's Academy baseball star John Doyle was electric in Wednesday's 3-0 win over BB&N. The senior tri-captain pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits over six innings, and he also hit an inside the park home run at the plate to help support his own cause.

Frechette leaps ahead

Fresh off a dominant season on the basketball court, Governor's Academy's D.J. Frechette had a big day for the boys track team on Saturday, winning both the long jump (19-10 1/2) and the high jump (5-6) to help Governor's take second out of four with 64 team points. Andrew Swiniarski won the discus (124-11), Tae Tantinon won the javelin (155-7) and Dan Flynn won the 300-meter hurdles (48.7).

Willis wins two

Becca Willis won both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles in Saturday's meet for Governor's Academy girls track, taking the 100 in 17.1 and the 300 in 51.5. Grace Everett also won the 800 (2:37.2) and Julia Russolillo won the pole vault (8-0) as the Governor's girls took second out of four with 82.5 team points.
