Two errors in the top of the seventh led to three unearned runs for Swampscott, who held on to beat North Reading 5-2 in the Division 2 North semi-finals. The Hornets got a runner on in the bottom of the inning, but did not threaten. Senior Carly Swartz finished her career going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Unbeaten Raiders

 

The Central Catholic girls soccer team couldn't have done any better in the regular season, which they capped yesterday with a 2-0 win over a strong Swampscott team. The Raiders will enter the postseason with a perfect 17-0 record, which included 15 shutouts.

Wonderful Warnock

 

R.J. Warnock continued his mastery on the mound for North Reading, shutting down Swampscott 6-1  in Division 3 North first-round action. He threw a 3-hitter, striking out seven without issuing a walk or an earned run, and also helped his own cause with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Stingy Hornets

 

North Reading's boys lacrosse team allowed only two goals in the last three quarters in a 13-5 victory over Swampscott. Nick Day had three goals and three assists and Nate Seed adde three goals and two assists to lead the Hornets (3-0) on offense.

Mike Gochakowski, who netted 57 goals last spring, scored six goals in Georgetown boy lacrosse's first game this year, a 13-4 victory over Swampscott.

Four wins in 5 days

Whittier Tech is still the Wildcats, but Kevin Bradley might to call his girls the "warriors" after their effort this week. Whittier made it four wins in five days with a 42-30 defeat of Swampscott. Michaela Martin led the winners with 16 points. "I'm proud of their defense, really strong, pressure defense," said Bradley. "They've been battle tested. That was a Swampscott team that needed to win to make the tournament, and we did a really nice job."

McAuliffe, Hornets roll on

Winning pitcher Ryan McAuliffe started the rarest of rare 1-3-6 double-play in the top of the seventh, slamming the door on a powerhouse Swampscott lineup and finishing the Big Blue off, 2-1, in the Division 3 North quarterfinals.
