Andover's Mullins falls short of goal

BOSTON — Andover’s Maggie Mullins had a goal to run the 2-mile in under 10:50 at All-States yesterday.

There was only one problem: Her nerves got the better of her.

Mullins was the top seed in the event, with a personal best time (10:51.04) that is just shy of North Andover great Kirsten Kasper’s three-year-old area record of 10:48.68.

Mullins wins at D-1 state meet, adds to legacy

Andover’s Maggie Mullins won the 2-mile race in 10:59.56 at the Division 1 state meet and likely will be the No. 1 seed at All-States on Sunday. “She has set her legacy as being the fastest distance runner to come through Andover and she has state championships to back it now,” Andover coach Peter Comeau said. “I am so proud of her.” Andover girls placed seventh as a team with 28 points.  Newton North won with 66 points. Mullins holds the Andover girls track and field program record for the indoor 2-mile, indoor mile and outdoor mile. Comeau is positive Mullins will break the outdoor 2-mile record this spring. “She will get it without a doubt,” Comeau said. Mullins didn’t run as well as she did last week when she won the 2-mile at the MVC meet by recording nearly a nine-second personal best of  10:51.04 and falling just shy of former North Andover great Kirsten Kasper’s three-year-old area record of 10:48.68. However, Mullins has a shot to break Kasper’s record Sunday. “She was a tad nervous,” Comeau said of Mullins. “I talked to her after her race and she said she was a little nervous and she thought she could have gone faster.” Comeau is looking for her to break 10:50 at All-States. Andover’s Terra Organisciak, Micaela Soucy, Sydney Gillis and Alex Puccia placed second in the 4x200 (1:46.65). Comeau was disappointed with seventh place after his team finished second last year.  “I am only happen when we win but I was very pleased with the performance of the kids,” he said. “I see there is a lot of potential with the young kids. ... You can’t win every year.”

Life is good for Mullins

BOSTON — Somebody please buy Maggie Mullins a “Life is Good” T-shirt. On Feb. 2, the Andover senior signed a letter of intent to run track at Boston College. And then last night she ran her personal best of 10:51.04 to win the 2-mile and help the Andover girls win the MVC indoor championship meet.   That was nearly a nine-second personal best and fell just shy of former North Andover great Kirsten Kasper’s three-year-old area record of 10:48.68. The runner-up in the 2-mile finished more than a minute behind Mullins, who smashed the meet record of 11:09.58 that she set last year. Andover beat out runner-up Central Catholic, 89-74, and Lowell came in third (70). “(Mullin’s) time was awesome,” Andover coach Peter Comeau said. “We’ll see how good she is next week (at Division 1 States), when she’s up against everybody. Then we can decide where her fate will be as a distance runner.”    “Last year in the spring I kind of burned out,” said Mullins, a former soccer player who ran cross country for the first time as a junior. “I had a really bad spring season. I wasn’t injured but I wasn’t feeling really good.” Her burn out didn’t linger as she repeated as Eagle-Tribune MVP in cross country in the fall. Comeau added, “I’m happy for her and the season she’s having right now because last year was a tough year for her.” Comeau said BC gave Mullins a half-scholarship. “If she starts making these times, the money will go up,” he said.   Lowell won the boys championship with 104 points. The Red Raiders were followed by Chelmsford (53), Central (43).
