If Cape Ann League teams don't know it already, they're going to find out soon enough that Hamilton-Wenham freshman point guard Mike Carter-Williams is the real deal. Carter-Williams blasted off in the Gloucester Holiday Tournament over the weekend, scoring 57 points in two games. He had 10 treys in the two games as H-W went 1-1.

For the season, Carter-Williams is averaging 22.8 for the 3-3 Generals.

"We're at practice one day, watching (Carter-Williams), and I looked at (assistant coach) Doug Hoak and we both thought, hey, this kid can really play," said Hamilton-Wenham coach Marty Binette. "We graduated a lot of players, so we were really looking for young players to step in this season.

"Physically, Mike still looks like a freshman. He's very skinny and we're going to have to be careful that he doesn't wear down, but he's an impact freshman, no doubt about it. He knocks down the jumper and has a nice handle for a young kid. He's got deceptive quickness and draws a lot of fouls going to the basket."

Carter-Williams is the son of Ipswich High girls coach Mandy Zegarowski.

"I've knows this kid since he was about eight years old," Binette said. "Mandy would come to the gym for various reasons and Mike would hang around and play. I'm glad he ended up here."
