Less than a minute into the second half of last night's Division 3 North first-rounder, Greater Lawrence Tech's Nate Adames stepped up and buried a 3-pointer to knot the score at 33-33, and silence the partisan sellout crowd crammed into Bedford High.

There was one negative side effect, though. It woke up Dual County Conference small school MVP Terrence Favors.

The Buccaneer senior simply assaulted the backboards, proving too much to handle with 22 of his game-high 34 points after the break, lifting third-seeded Bedford over the scrappy No. 14 Reggies, 69-57.

"They're an aggressive team, and we didn't handle it well," said Greater Lawrence coach Dan Habib, who finished his first year with the Reggies with a 10-10 record. "We made some bad decisions. They're quick and aggressive. They come at you from all angles.

"The glass hurt us tonight, no doubt. They're much bigger than we are, and we haven't really blocked out well all year. It's something we always talk about, but you have to have a desire to do it."

The Bucs attacked and doubled from end to end. Through the first half, the press yielded layups | for both teams. That all ended in the third.

"That third quarter we didn't handle the pressure very well," added Habib. "We self-destructed throwing the ball away, and we just weren't getting shots."

If Bedford missed, Favors, who had 18 rebounds, usually was there to clean up the mess. The 6-foot-3 brute had nine points in a decisive 16-5 run which turned a 37-36 tossup into a 53-41 lead. Greater Lawrence wouldn't get within single digits again.

Freshmen Donald Celestin overcame a shaky start and finished with a dozen points to lead the visitors, who only had two seniors.

"It's the first tournament game these guys have been in," said Habib. "We showed the jitters and were a little anxious."

Brian Cabrera added 12 points of his own for the Reggies, while Hector Heredia tossed in 10 points and for much of the night was an effective one-man press-breaker.
