The Swampscott girls basketball team may have graduated a very talented senior class last spring, but the Big Blue sent a message last night.
Showing that they remain a serious threat to win the Northeastern Conference South, the Big Blue picked up an impressive 50-41 win over a strong Winthrop team at home.
Junior forwards Allie Beaulieu and Tara Nimkar were too much for the Vikings to handle.
Beaulieu scored 18 points and collected 10 rebounds and six assists. Nimkar, meanwhile, scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
"It was very nice getting this win after losing to them last year when we were both undefeated," Swampscott coach Jack Hughes said. "It was a great start tonight."
Swampscott (2-0) jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter and maintained the eight-point lead in the second quarter.
Winthrop cut the deficit to just three (35-32) after three quarters, but the Big Blue had a very strong fourth quarter to put it away.
Sophomore guard Kara Gillberg had an excellent fourth quarter and finished with 11 points.
Courtney Finn scored a game-high 24 points for Winthrop, which slipped to 2-1.
