LOWELL — With its playoff hopes in the newly realigned Massachusetts football scene still very much in question, Andover was hoping to solidify its case with a key victory last night.

Unfortunately for the Golden Warriors, they could find very little on offense against a gritty Lowell front, and their defense eventually broke down as the Red Raiders dealt Andover a rough 28-7 loss.

“The first half was back and fourth and I thought the defense played well,” said Golden Warriors coach E.J. Perry. “But we left the D out on the field for too long, which has been the case a lot of the season, and that is tough. Now we just have to wait and see what happens.”

Andover must now wait for the playoff matchups to be released tomorrow to see if it qualified for the Division 1 North tournament, or falls back into the consolation games for teams left out.

After Lowell marched down and scored on an 11-play drive to open the game, Andover seemed to answer right back.

The Golden Warriors quickly moved down field on their first possession, with Oliver Eberth hitting Will Eikenberry on a 10-yard pass and Sylvester carrying to the Red Raider 35-yard line. But Eberth was stopped on fourth-and-1, and that turned out to be the Warriors’ best drive of the day.

“We had the first drive going and we didn’t execute on the fourth-and-1,” said Perry. “That really hurt us.”

Lowell focused its defense on stopping dynamic back Sylvester, who had rushed for more than 200 yards in each of the Golden Warriors’ last two contests.

Stacking eight and nine players in the box, the Red Raiders were able to limit Sylvester to just 49 yards on 15 carries, with just 11 in the second half. Eberth scored the Golden Warriors’ lone TD on a 75-yard run with 10 seconds left in the game.

Senior lineman Ben Hartford was a bright spot, making 10 tackles and linemate Ommel Bonilla had eight stops.

“We’ll have to see what happens in this new system now,” said Perry. “But we have to find better ways to adjust and play.”
