GEORGETOWN — If you're Georgetown High baseball coach Justin Spurr, you absolutely need your baseball team to tighten things up with the Division 4 North Tournament.

A slew of mistakes — three errors and a whopping six outs on the base paths — cost the Royals the Bert Spofford Memorial tourney title in an 8-5 nine-inning loss to Newburyport here yesterday.

Next week, they might end the season.

Georgetown spotted the Port a 3-0 lead but showed some grit with three of its own in the third. Chris Chiklakis smacked an RBI triple and Colby Ingraham added a run-scoring double in the frame.

Spurr went to soft-throwing reliever Duncan Hough in the third, and he silenced the Clipper bats to the point where he deserved the victory. the Clippers kept coming.

The visitors, who didn't qualify for the postseason put up one in the sixth, one in the seventh and ultimately three in the ninth to make a winner out of Webster, who went the route.

Painfully, the last three Royals who reached base with a chance to win it in the seventh or eighth were either picked off by Webster or caught stealing.

And it looked like the Royals would grant him one in the fifth.

Walks to Chiklakis and Mike Goddu, two steals, two wild pitches and a Port throwing error made it 5-3 through five. But while the Royals seemed content, finishing the day with only four hits off Port righty Scott Webster,

Hough deserved a much better fate, taking the loss with five innings of five-hit ball without a walk.
