After going two weeks and seven outings without a win, the Hamilton-Wenham baseball team was starting to feel a bit weary as the bounces always seemed to go against the Generals. Saturday, it all changed as H-W used a four run sixth inning to outlast Amesbury, 7-4, to shake the winless monkey off their backs.
"It was starting to feel like a gorilla," quipped longtime Generals coach Doug Hoak. "We hit in the clutch and we finally were able to play some reasonably good defense."
H-W (1-7) led 2-1 early but the Indians battled back and the teams were deadlocked 3-3 after five. Matt Twomey delivereda two-run single while Matt Stewart and Andy Duval also drove in runs to spot the Generals a 7-3 lead. Though Amesbuy added a run in the sixth, they were never able to climb back into the game.
"We didn't cave (after Amesbury tied it 3-3). We came right back," said Hoak.
Twomey finished 2 for 3 while driving in four runs, Matt Greeke had a clutch double to lead off the decisive fifth inning and John Hession chipped in two hits.
