Georgetown scores first, but Essex Tech rolls from there

HAWTHORNE - When senior quarterback Nick Calvani found Jimmy Sherman all alone in the left corner of the end zone for a 18-yard touchdown pass early Friday night, it was the start that the Georgetown football team was hoping for.
What happened the rest of the evening, however, was not.
North Shore Tech went on to score five unanswered touchdowns and pinned the Royals with a 34-7 loss on opening night.
The Hawks tied it up late in the first quarter, driving 73 yards before Brendan Ahern scored on a 17-yard touchdown run. J.T. Reynolds added the extra point, and it stayed 7-7 until halftime.
Georgetown had trouble all night long with bad snaps that Calvani had to chase down for big losses. On the opening drive of the third quarter a snap from center sailed over the quarterback's head on the first play for a 15-yard loss, and two plays later Calvani's pass was picked off by Essex Tech defensive back Jackson Leete.
That set up the Hawks' go-ahead score as Lazzaro broke through the Georgetown defense for a 30-yard touchdown run to make it 13-7.
The Hawks then scored on their next three possessions to put the game safely in the win column. The next scoring drive went 82 yards in six plays, with Lazzaro finishing it off with a 63-yard TD run and Leete rushing for the two point conversion.
Georgetown hosts Greater Lawrence Friday at 7 p.m.
