TYNGSBORO — Greater Lawrence won the early-season battle of undefeateds on Saturday afternoon when the Reggies took down conference rival Greater Lowell 44-26.
Contributions came from both sides of the ball, as the Reggies (3-0) not only piled up well over 300 yards of total offense, but generated two forced fumbles on the defensive side.
“There are not many 3-0 teams left in the state,” said coach Tony Sarkis. “They’re in a unique situation and they need to appreciate every second of that record.”
The man of the day for Greater Lawrence was 5-6, 160-pound junior running back Ojany Belliard.  The shifty back was handed the football 21 times, and torched the Greater Lowell defense for 180 yards to go along with three TDs.
Belliard refused to be taken down, at times carrying three defenders with him after he broke through the arms of multiple tacklers.
“I’m feeling good out there. I just need to keep chugging and keep practicing,” said Belliard.
When asked if he did anything different today, Belliard said, “I just trusted my linemen more.  Last week I started popping my feet and I kept stopping, but today I just trusted my linemen and kept chugging for more and more yards.”
With 4:54 left in the first half, Nicholas Rossetti cut the lead to 14-12 for Greater Lowell when he barrelled his way into the endzone from the 1-yard line. However, Rene Mota took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the house to swing momentum back to the Reggies’ side.
There was a similar situation in the third quarter, when quarterback Kyle Vasconcellos scampered 63 yards for the second of his two rushing touchdowns on the day. This coming only two plays after Greater Lowell had cut the lead to 22-18.
“I’m very proud of these guys,” said Sarkis. “As a coach, if you see effort out there, never giving up and responding to adversity, you can’t be any more proud as a coach.”
The Reggies host Northeast Saturday at 7 p.m.
