Duffy, Valenti win New England pole vault titles

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Our region is the pole vault epicenter of New England hands down.

North Andover junior Erick Duffy won the boys title with a 15-9 and Julia Valenti of North Reading soared 12-3 to win the girls crown at the New England Meet. There is more. Also Saturday Valenti’s teammate, Rachel Hill, went 10-9 to finish fourth.

Duffy and the Dartmouth-bound Valenti were our Eagle-Tribune MVPs in indoor track.

Other highlights included Methuen’s Wileshka Samuel taking a second in the 200 and a fifth in the 100 (12/32/25.49), Haverhill’s George Papoulis grabbing sixth in the 800 to beat his own area (non-prep school) record with a 1:54.22 in the 800 and Lawrence’s Fabian Tineo, sore ankle and all, grabbing a sixth in the 300 hurdles in 39.89.

Other area placers (only top 6 place) were Haverhill’s Jack Pettis sixth in the javelin (171-3) and Sanborn sophomore Megan Sheen fifth in the discus (116-8).

Timberlane stars Liam Kimball and Kyle Faucher skipped the event for graduation.
