SALEM — Salem went blow for blow with Bedford but the top-seeded and unbeaten Bulldogs held on for a 12-7 win.

The good news is the two will go at it one more time in the playoffs next Saturday at 4 p.m. at 9-0 Bedford.

Matt Soldano cut the lead to 12-7 on an 8-yard run with 8:11 left in the fourth. Sixth-ranked Salem (6-3) got the ball back and drove to the 35 before the drive stalled. Salem got the ball back deep in its own end late in the final moments but didn't have enough time to mount a drive.

Salem blew a golden opportunity in the second quarter on a first and goal from the 3 but the hosts fumbled it over on third and goal from the 2.

"If we scored in the second quarter it's a different game," said Salem coach Rob Pike. "We play them next week. We learned we can play with them. We have to clean up some things. We could beat them."

Pike said Josh Sibanda ran well, Soldano passed well and that "middle linebacker Ben Genest was all over the field."

End Matt Carney registered a sack.
