Senior Madison Schaefer fired a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and No. 3 Newton North downed No. 6 Methuen, 4-1, in the Division 1 North quarterfinals.
Junior Kelsie McGonagle did her job in defeat. She scattered seven hits and all four runs were unearned. She also snared a couple of hard-hit liners.
Rangers coach Jason Smith said, "They were the better team today. We had some opportunities but didn't take advantage."
Methuen (15-7) snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Nyah Mazzone broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single. She moved to second on a Sam Ferraro sacrifice and Coralie Mathieu singled her home. But that was the visitors' final hit of the day.
North (19-3) pushed across two runs in the bottom of the frame and added two insurance runs in the sixth.
