There were some highlights certainly, but it's obvious that the Pinkerton girls cross country team is not close to where it wants to be.
The Astros finished fourth Saturday at the Manchester Invitational and while it's true that senior Britney Johnson did not run and current fifth runner Molly McGaffigan ran in the freshman race, finishing third, several of the veterans were a bit further back than expected.
Sophomore Meghan Cross did run a solid race, finishing ninth overall in 19:47 on Derryfield Park's challenging 5K course, but the next Astro to finish was junior Ciara April in 28th in 20:33, two places ahead of classmate Jordan Vaillancourt.
Champlain Valley finished first with 130 points in the 30-team field, followed by Bishop Guertin (143), Souhegan (154) and the Astros (214). BG figures to be Pinkerton's top challenger in the Division 1 meet later in the season.
