BYFIELD -- Lawrence went to the well three times too many last night.

Well, more precisely, the Lancers threw at Triton defensive back Jared Wells three times too many and paid the price as the Vikings rolled to a commanding 29-13 win in chilly Byfield.

Wells picked off three passes for Triton (3-6) and returned the final one 47 yards for the Vikes' final score. For good measure, the senior also rushed for scores of one and five yards, and completed an option pass to boot as Triton snapped a five-game losing streak.

"Jared wells had a career game," said Triton coach Shawn McElligott. "He ran hard offensively, threw a long pass for us and was just immense defensively with the three interceptions."

Leading 13-7 at the half, Triton lost starting quarterback Matt Emerzian and went the rest of the way with third stringer Sam Ferrara. But Ben Ferrara added a 25-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to make it 16-7 and give the Vikes some breathing room.

"That was big," McElligott said. "That put us up by two scores and we really needed that."

A one-yard plunge by Wells later in the quarter opened up the margin and by the time Wells was sprinting down the sidelines with his third pick in the fourth quarter, Lawrence was eagerly eyeing its warm bus in the parking lot. "Jared had a great game, but a lot of people stepped up," McElligott said. "They had been throwing the ball well coming in and they put some pressure on our secondary, but everybody responded."

Triton hosts CAL leader Masconomet, which routed Pentucket 35-0, this Friday.
