SALEM — Toughness and talent, that’s what made Pinkerton a champion.
Again.
The Astros repeated as state gymnastics champions, outscoring runner-up Salem 136.525-129.675.
Sophomore Olivia Bogaczyk took second on the all-around and Astro teammate Courtney Thompson placed fifth.
“This is pretty amazing,” said first-year Astro coach Chelsey Veilleux. “We were undefeated and top seed. It puts extra pressure on you. You train all season and it comes down to that one routine. Just have that one chance.”
The Astros made the most of their chance.
Of the all-around 1-2 punch, Veilleux said, “They did a great job. They were 1-2 last year in the all-around and they did well today.”
Plymouth’s Abby Clark won the all-around, edging out defending champ Bogaczyk, 36.55-35.325.
Veilleux was surprised that Thompson could even compete.
“Courtney was just off a fractured foot with minimal training,” said the coach. “It was a big gamble. She wanted to do it for the team. It just shows the type of competitor she is. Most athletes would just sit and heal up. She’s a fighter.”
The Clutch Performer Award goes to Pinkerton’s lone senior Alexandra Halle, who had a career high on the beam and led the Astros in that event and the floor.
Salem was led by Sarah Halle, who took fifth on bars, and Kadianne Tommasi, who was tied for 10th on all-around.
