After beating Pope John 69-33 in January, Whittier stunned by Tigers in quarters

LAWRENCE — Pope John XXIII coach Jake Feraco watched Whittier play four times this winter so he had an airtight game plan heading into the Division 4 North semifinals.

“I noticed that with every time in the halfcourt set, they were bothered by man-to-man,” Feraco said. “So we knew we had to guard them halfcourt man-to-man. We knew we needed to keep the ball out of Michaela Martin’s hands because she’s a great playmaker.”

Whittier excited for Vonleh homecoming

Michaela Martin scored 15 points and Kayla Riley netted 10 points to lead Whittier girls basketball 69-33 over Pope John.

The game initially was scheduled for today. But it was switched from today to yesterday (Sunday) so Samnell Vonleh (7 points vs. Pope John) and other Whittier players could watch Vonleh's brother Noah Vonleh make his TD Garden NBA debut.

Big inning sparks North Shore

The Bulldogs (8-5) sent 12 men to the dish and scored eight runs in the first inning en route to a convincing win over the Tigers of Pope John, 11-1. Joe D'ambrosio's two-run double sparked the big inning while Cam Fletcher also had an RBI and Shane Bennett was 2 for 2 on the day with two runs scored and a RBI.
