 Senior Heather Weldon sank five 3-pointers and scored 19 points but Presentation of Mary fell to Pope John 65-35 in the Division 4 North  quarterfinals.

Haverhill's volleyball team played its second unit the whole way in a sweep of Pope John. Freshman Kya Burdier led the Hillies with 10 assists and six aces.

The Greater Lawrence volleyball team had a terrific day serving the ball. Rosendo Ortiz, Tim Burgess and Christian Lugo each had seven aces apiece to lead the Reggies to a 3-1 win over Pope John.

North Andover pulled out a tough 70-65 overtime win over non-league foe Pope John. Connor Rogers had 21 points and Jake McElroy added 18.

Katerina Hassapis scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on her way to tournament MVP honors as North Reading won the Pope John tournament with a 52-35 win over host Pope John.

LAWRENCE — Pope John XXIII coach Jake Feraco watched Whittier play four times this winter so he had an airtight game plan heading into the Division 4 North semifinals.

“I noticed that with every time in the halfcourt set, they were bothered by man-to-man,” Feraco said. “So we knew we had to guard them halfcourt man-to-man. We knew we needed to keep the ball out of Michaela Martin’s hands because she’s a great playmaker.”

Michaela Martin scored 15 points and Kayla Riley netted 10 points to lead Whittier girls basketball 69-33 over Pope John.

The game initially was scheduled for today. But it was switched from today to yesterday (Sunday) so Samnell Vonleh (7 points vs. Pope John) and other Whittier players could watch Vonleh's brother Noah Vonleh make his TD Garden NBA debut. 

Greater Lawrence rode five interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown and another returned on a Tiger two-point conversion attempt, helped the Reggies open the season on a high not.

The Bulldogs (8-5) sent 12 men to the dish and scored eight runs in the first inning en route to a convincing win over the Tigers of Pope John, 11-1. Joe D'ambrosio's two-run double sparked the big inning while Cam Fletcher also had an RBI and Shane Bennett was 2 for 2 on the day with two runs scored and a RBI.
