The Phillips Academy Girls Track team won a three-team meet on the road, defeating Loomis Chaffee and host NMH. Peyton McGovern of Methuen won the 800 and Andover's Caroline Shipley took the 400.

Phillips girls cop title

 

 The Phillips Academy girls cross country team captured its first Class A Interscholastic title since 2010, and in convincing fashion. The Big Blue was first with just 32 points, well ahead of runner-up Loomis-Chaffee. Grace Rademacher led the way, taking third in 19:10 ofn the 5K course at Hotchkiss with North Andover's Michaela Jones right behind in fourth (19:16) and Methuen's Peyton McGovern in sixth (19:24).

Phillips offense struggles in opening loss

Coming off a magical 2013 season that saw Phillips go unbeaten and won the Etter Bowl, the Big Blue opened 2014 on a sour note, falling to Loomis Chaffee 13-0 on Saturday.

"Our defense played with a lot of courage and played an excellent game," said Big Blue coach Leon Modeste. "But they were on the field the whole game. Our offense struggled and made it tough on our defense."

Impressive opener

 

 

Phillips Academy's girls basketball team got out to a nine-point halftime lead on its way to a season-opening 59-54 victory over Loomis Chaffee. Maggie Brown led the scoring with 16 points, two more than Giovanna Pickering. Kasey Hartung and Pickering had eight rebounds apiece as the starting guards.

Junior Jessica Ngui shot a school-record 76 to help lead Merrimack women's golf to third place after day one of the Mount Holyoke Invitational.

The Warriors are one stroke behind second-place Wagner College and 10 strokes behind Williams College.

split decision for Northern Essex

Jessica Goulet had 10 kills and four services aces and Devin Mears added 10 assists in Northern Essex's 3-0 sweep of Nashua Community College, on game scores of 25-5, 25-14, 25-5.  The Knights also received a five-kill, six service ace effort from Vanessa Ferretto during the season-opening win.

Phillips 1, Loomis Chaffee 0

Graeme Henderson's first half goal was enough for Phillips Academy, in a 1-0 win at Loomis-Chaffee.  The goal came off a corner kick and was assisted by Nick DiStefano. Jack Katkavich made six saves to secure the win.All three Big Blue wins have come by way of a shutout (3-0, 1-0, 1-0).

Phillips suffers 31-point loss

Phillips managed just 68 rushing yards and 158 passing yards in a 44-13 loss to Loomis Chaffee. 

Quarterback Joe Verheaugh threw for 158 yards on 14 for 30 passing. He ran for one touchdown and threw for another.

Phillips breaks ice

 

Phillips Academy won its first boys basketball game of the season, 50-44 over Loomis Chaffee, thanks to an effective inside-outside. Haverhill's Tom Palleschi did the work inside with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks while Haverhill's Ryan Hartung and nine  combination and LaVaron Sylvester combined for five 3-pointers and 25 points. Sylvester also had five steals.

Phillips drops opener

Phillips coach Leon Modeste was far from pleased about how his squad's 2011 season opened, as the Big Blue fell to Loomis Chaffee 33-13 yesterday.

"It hurts," said Modeste. "We were really banged up, but you still have to play, and we did not play well tonight."
