Doubles help Andover advance

Abhay Yajurvedi and Nik Narina won No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Nate Gellman and Conor Rea took No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2 as Andover edged Boston Latin 3-2 in the Division 1 Round of 32. Joe Colecchi added a win at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-1) for the Golden Warriors, who now await the winner of Brookline and Malden which will be played on Tuesday.

Royals run out of steam in second half

The Georgetown offense is going to be an explosive one to watch this fall.

Friday night, the Royals exploded for three touchdowns in the first quarter to take an eventual 27-6 halftime lead, but a strong Boston Latin team came roaring back after the break to earn a 36-27 season-opening win.

Hillies edged out

 

Haverhill gave Boston Latin all could handle but bowed out in the Division 1 North quarterfinals, 2-1. Ryan Brown (2 for 4) scored Haverhill's only run on a passed ball and Shawn Joubert pitched well in defeat, allowing just five hits. Elijah Moses had two hits for the Hillies (9-9), who stranded 11 runners.

Still perfect

Andover is still perfect and Avi Janarthanan is still perfect. He won a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 thriller at No. 1 as Andover downed Boston Latin, 5-0, in the Division 1 North quarterfinals. Coach Mike Wartman said, "He dug deep and stayed patient. He played a great tiebreaker. He was down early and came back."

Miracle Workers

An 0-10 Methuen volleyball squad had its bus break down en route to Boston Latin Academy. Methuen lost Game 1 but pulled the stunner for a 3-1 win over a BLA squad which was 8-8. Starring in the preliminary round tourney shocker were Chris Huynh, Randy Reyes, Davy Faulkner, Andrew Lussier and Mitchell Crowe. Coach Matt Twomey said, "It was a crazy day."

Led by three goals from TJ Fredo, the North Andover boys hockey team beat Boston Latin, which came into the game ranked No. 16 in EMass by the Boston Globe, 4-0. Patrick Green made 21 saves to earn the shutout.

Driscoll delivers late

With just over a minute left in a tie game, Brenna Greene fired a shot on net that led to a juicy rebound. But after the puck was juggled around for a bit, it came to the stick of Jess Driscoll who fired it into the back of the net to give Methuen-Tewksbury a 3-2 win over Boston Latin. The win was also goalie Kaia Hollingsworth's 100th in net for the Red Rangers.

Mito-Action Game

North Andover hockey is benefitting "Mito-Action" mitochondrial reseach during Sunday's game vs. Tewksbury at Merrimack College (7:30 p.m.). The cause is dear to the Knights as North Andover standout Michael Harty's brother, Matthew, died 6 years ago from the deease. Money will be raised that night through raffles, "chuck a puck," and part of the gate proceeds.
