LAKEVILLE, Conn. — The Phillips defense had the Hotchkiss quarterback scrambling for his life in a 47-13 season-opening win over Hotchkiss.
The Big Blue had a whopping nine sacks and 300-plus pound lineman Ricardo Hernandez had a 2-yard fumble recovery for a score. Adam Cohen and Kevin Milowski each had three sacks.
Read More »Tied 2-2 after the fourth round of the shootout, Phillips Andover's Elizabeth Welch faced down the Hotchkiss School goalie. She carried the ball forward, made a move, and gave her team what proved to be the championship-winning goal in the team's 2-1 win in New England Prep A championship game Sunday.
Coming into the tournament as the No. 5 seed, Phillips upset St. Paul's in the first round, avenging a blowout loss from the regular season. Phillips followed that with a 2-1 double overtime win over top-seeded Greenwich Academy, with Welch scoring the winner in that game as well, and then edged out a hard fought win over Hotchkiss.
Phillips took an early lead, with Jo Caipo scoring to put on the board. Hotchkiss answered less than two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, and then proceeded to pressure the Phillips zone for most of the rest of regulation.
The Big Blue defense and goalie Liz Keefe were able to hold strong, and once in overtime Phillips began to turn the tables on Hotchkiss. But the game-winning goal never came, sending the game to a decisive penalty shootout.
Phillips scored first, with Meg Ward potting her team's first opportunity to take a one goal lead after one round, but Hotchkiss stopped Phillips' next shot and scored to tie it up.
Charlotte Welch scored Phillips' second goal, and with the score tied at 2-2 after four, Welch scored the winner and then Hotchkiss missed its last opportunity, giving the Big Blue the title.
Phillips finishes the season 16-3.
Alex Dziadosz scored one goal and assisted on two others and Phillips Academy beat Hotchkiss 5-1 in the New England quarterfinals.
