Pentucket's softball team capped off a fine regular season with two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to edge Rockport 5-4. Bernadette Corrado had the game-winning RBI in the seventh and Mary Kate Corrado was 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Finally tourney bound

Julianne Meehan was 4 for 4 with four doubles and pitched a complete-game two-hitter with nine strikeouts as Pentucket beat Lynnfield 10-0. The win qualified the Sachems for the state tourney for the first time since 2004.

Pentucket 10, Masconomet 0

Senior captain Lexie Corso was a thorn in pitcher Julianne Meehan's side with three hits, but no other Masconomet hitters could break through as Pentucket avenged an opening-day loss with a vengeance, 10-0. Meehan had 10 strikeouts on the day and added a double offensively as did sisters Bernadette and Mary Kate Corrado. The Sachems now need just one more victory in their last three games to qualify for state tourney play.

The North Reading softball team (9-5) remained hot, defeating Pentucket 6-2 in five innings for its fifth straight victory.

Pentucket exploded for three first-inning runs and Julianne Meehan's pitching made them stand up, snapping Newburyport's five-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory. Meehan, who finished with a two-hitter and 13 strikeouts, had an RBI double in the first and Bernadette Corrado added a run-scoring triple.

Julianne Meehan threw six no-hit innings but in the seventh two errors and a double led to three unearned runs and Wilmington beat Pentucket 3-1. The hard-luck loser fanned eight and didn't walk a batter.
