Despite 18 points from senior Joseph Urena and 14 more from Oscar Reynoso, Greater Lawrence fell out of the Division 3 tourney after an 80-60 loss to Saugus.  The No. 9 Reggies fell behind early in the first half and couldn't catch up.

HAVERHILL — Hours after learning it had earned the top seed in the upcoming Division 3 North Sectional, Whittier went out and won what the Wildcats hope will be just the first of their postseason titles.

Greater Lawrence, which had an up-and-down season, is way, way up at just the right time. After stunning Methuen in the regular-season finale to clinch a tourney berth, the Reggies yesterday upset a 16-win Worcester Tech team, 62-59, in the state vocational semifinals. Felix Marte continued his fine play with 19 points and Oscar Reynoso and Joseph Urena added 11 each. Big guys Vargas and Ryan Kobrenski sparked the Reggies with their stellar all-around play.

Sophomore Oscar Reynoso scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter and junior Ryan Kobrenski hauled down several key rebounds in the final eight minutes to give Greater Lawrence some separation in a 52-44 victory over Lynn Tech.

Senior Joseph Urena scored a career-high 20 points, including netting three 3-pointers, during Senior Night as Greater Lawrence boys basketball won 53-52 over Greater Lowell.

Greater Lawrence kept its postseason hopes alive with a 50-44 win over Lynn Tech in OT.  Felix Marte harrassed the visitors into a tough late showed to force OT. Oscar Reynoso sank a big 3-pointer early in the extra session and Marte followed with a hoop to give the Reggies a comfortable lead. Joseph Urena led the Reggies with 18 points.

Greater Lawrence got big 3-pointers from Felix Marte and Joey Urena and then hit 9 of 12 free throws as the Reggies pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 56-47 victory over Shawsheen.

Great team defense and 18 of 22 free throw shooting did the trick in Greater Lawrence's 62-49 victory over Shawsheen. Papaciro Ortiz led three Reggies in double figures with a game-high 18 points. 

Kyle Mansour, whose mother is the Greater Lawrence Tech girls’ coach, tossed in a game-high 12 points to lead Methuen over the Reggies, 62-39, in the seventh-place game. Billy Parker backed him with nine points. Ryan Freeman provided some excitement with two dunks. Papaciro “Big Papi” Ortiz led the Reggies with 10 points.

Ben Slepian was on fire from behind the arc, driving Salem's second-half offensive explosion en route to a 64-42 consolation round triumph over Greater Lawrence Tech.

Slepian (game-high 16 points with four 3-pointers) triggered a 22-8 third-quarter run with a pair of 3-balls to turn a five-point battle into a rout.
