SALEM — Central Catholic and the Methuen-Tewksbury Red Ranger girls wasted no time putting the puck in the net, but it was the Red Rangers coming out with the 5-2 victory Saturday evening at the Salem Icenter.
Kelly Golini opened the scoring just 59 seconds into the first period for Methuen-Tewksbury. Golini found the back of the net twice on the night, bringing her total to five goals in just three games.
"She's a natural goal-scorer," said Methuen-Tewksbury coach Sarah Oteri. "She has great vision, and is a fantastic decision-maker when she gets the puck on her stick."
Golini is making her triumphant return after playing Juniors last year. An impact player for Methuen-Tewksbury as an eighth grader two years ago when she scored 27 goals, Golini has led the Red Rangers to a 3-0 start.
Amanda Mambro scored her first of two goals just 26 seconds after Golini. Leading 3-1 after the first period, Kat LeFebre, the Red Rangers' only senior, made it 4-1.
Colleen McAnespie and tri-captain Emily Frocione were the goal-scorers for Central Catholic, who now fall to 1-2.
Central Catholic switched to their back-up goalie Julie Thing early in the second period. Thing kept the Raiders in the contest, stopping 22 of 23 shots.
"She's a local kid from Andover whose brother played for the Central Catholic boys team," said Central head coach Jeff Marggraf. "I didn't expect her to get a lot of ice time, but she stepped up today and had a fantastic game."
Methuen-Tewksbury goalie Kaia Hollingsworth turned away 25 of 27 shots. Hollingsworth, a second-year starter, hails from Methuen.
"She's very strong for an eighth-grader," said Oteri. "She shows great poise on and off the ice, and has done everything we've asked her to do."
Central hosts Chelmsford Saturday while Methuen-Tewsbury hosts Billerica Wednesday at 5 p.m.
