Central takes crown

 

As expected, Central Catholic rolled to the title of the 12-team Winnacunnet Tournament with 193 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up and MVC rival Haverhill (143 1/2).

The Raiders had three top seeds and they all came through with titles — 106-pounder Tyler Glynn, 126-pounder Tom Pagliarulo and 160-pounder Donovan Nolan. Finishing second for Central were Joey Sanchez (132), Dan Doherty (145), Brandon Desfosses (152) and Nick Janco (195). Desfosses picked up his first loss when he injury defaulted in the finals as a precaution.

Prescott stands out

 

It was senior night for the Haverhill wrestling team, but it was a freshman who stood out. Sam Prescott continued his recent surge with a third-period pin of Andover's Nate Dykstra at 126 pounds as Haverhill (15-9) whipped Andover 46-21.

Coyne sparks sweep

 

Trailing after the first period and almost pinned, Haverhill 138-pounder Matt Coyne came back to pin Whittier's Nate Buzzell in the third period to highlight the Hillies' 49-24 victory over the Wildcats. Coyne was 3-0 on the day as Haverhill swept a quad-meet with Whittier, Franklin Tech and Greater Lowell.

Big win for Chrietien

Haverhill's Luc Chrietien won the match of the day in Wednesday's meet against Tewksbury, beating Brock Dokos by 3-1 decision in a hard-fought 220-pound match. Tewksbury wound up winning the meet 40-36.

Central still unbeaten

 

Central Catholic remained unbeaten (14-0) with a Merrimack Valley Conference quad-meet at Lawrence, the closest meet a 44-30 win over the host Lancers. Joey Sanchez had three pins, alternating between 132 and 138, and Brandon Desfosses remained unbeaten with two wins at 160 and another at 170 while Donovan Nolan had three pins at 160 and 170 and Tom Pagliarulo was also 3-0.

Upset for Hillies

 

Haverhill's wrestling team stunned Lowell 42-29 courtesy of seven pins. Pins by Nick Tajada at 113 and Ronald Fuller at 113 were pivotal for the Hillies (8-3) and Jacob Roman clinched the win by staying off his back at 145 to avoid the pin.
