Central's Fay more than a blue-chip goalie

ROXBURY — Two athletes better known for their exploits in other endeavors won Division 2 state titles Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Track.
Central Catholic senior Amanda Fay, an All-Scholastic soccer goalie, won the shot put with a big 37-10.75 heave. North Andover senior Erick Duffy, one of the country’s top pole vaulters, cruised to the 55 meter hurdles title in 7.62 seconds. slicing 0.15 seconds off his own school record.
Fay smashed her previous career best of 35-6. She had a tremendous day with throws of (from first throw to last throw) 35-1, 34-0.75, 36-10.5,  37-2, 37-10.5 and 37-7.
She beat runner-up Vanessa Attaya of Billerica by over two feet.
Coach Katie Andrade said, “Amanda had a great day today. She’s worked hard all season, both in the throws and the sprints, with placing at this meet as the ultimate goal. She definitely achieved that goal winning the shot and placing eighth in the 4x200. Amanda is so competitive, she never shied away from the prospect of having to PR big time in order to win.”

Knights’ coach Steve Nugent said, “Just to put things in perspective, he pretty much practiced just one day this week. He vaulted and got 18 stitches in the face from the pole on Wednesday. Now he’s on an air plane to Spain with our Spanish Exchange. He’s just one of those special athletes.”
Duffy also anchored the second-place 4x200 team, which set a new school record. His teammates were Matt Manteiga, Tyler Glendon and Stephen Stabile.
Other highlights included Central’s Lukas Blythe grabbing third in the 300 and in the 4x400 with Greg Desrosiers, Jarod Gillis and Joe Howshan.
Central’s Sarah Freeman sped to a third in the mile in 5:14.95.
