Billerica Indians Softball '17

Hillies bow out

 

Haverhill dropped its quarterfinal softball matchup at Billerica, 9-2, but head coach Kara Melillo was upbeat about the season.

"I'm proud of this team," said Melillo, whose club finished 13-9. "Our tournament win (against Lynn Classical) was the first in 22 years."

Breaking it open

 

Lynnette Urena had a bases-clearing triple in the seventh to break open a tight game as Methuen remained unbeaten with a 6-0 win over Billerica. Kelsie McGonagle scattered five hits for the win.

Julia Chittick tossed a six-hitter and yielded just two earned runs but it wasn't enough as Billerica downed North Andover 3-2.

Andover loses in 11

Andover and Billerica softball went the distance and then some, with Billerica eventually getting a 2-1 win in 11 innings. Kathleen Hartnett was sensational in defeat, pitching all 11 innings while striking out 16, and she also went 4 for 5 at the plate while the rest of the team combined to go 3 for 33 otherwise. Meg Hartnett drove in Andover's lone run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
